Yeah.. People just dont get it.. I use to tell people years ago I wanted to make a career out of trading, they were like you can do that? Do you use your 401k to trade?? or my favorite was; So when you say trade you mean like on eBay?? haha
The flip side like you said was the disgusting stares... oh, you want to be like the guy from the movie Wall Street.
I dont tell them anything anymore. At the point I become a fulltime trader I am going to tell them I am retired.
In the long run, patience counts more than any other single element except knowledge. The two really go hand in hand. Those who want to succeed through their investments should learn that simple truth.
I have found for me that there is true joy in the solitude and pure work I did during the early mornings, all my life. For, I always believed I was in search of bigger game, than just pleasure and social interaction. I wanted to be supreme in my endeavors in the market - this is what gave me real pleasure and satisfaction, Playing the game and winning the game.
Poise, patience, and silence are the emotional keywords for the top trader.
The final qualification is "silence." Keep your own silent counsel - keep your victories and your failures to yourself - learn from them both. Poise, patience, and silence are attributes that must be cultivated. These Virtues do not come automatically to the stock market trader.

even among fellow Traders the conversation is limited because all interpret market differently
Weird that most of you get such negative reactions. I never get reactions like that just dumb questions like, where's the Ferrari, and how many houses do you own?
my response's have been , "You are gambling" to "you are following satan" to "you learned to trade from satan "and every thing in between
After the satan comments i sought counsel to learn other wise , the comments did messed me up in the head so now i just keep my mouth shut.

I have mentioned my 'occupation' to a few...most seem to get that glitter in their eyes. This chap is making easy money hand over fist.
I do well,only because of 4 years of banging my head on the desk,blowing a few accounts and learning everything the hard way...from mistakes. Most never get that...so I just keep quiet and tell them I work PT from my Uni Education.

My guess is that most negative comments received by traders are based on ignorance. The
extent of the general public's knowledge of trading is based on the evening news and to some
extent on movies.
I am always amazed that even on the PBS NewsHour, when they do their quick summary of the news segment,
they will >50% of the time have a reason why the market went up/down for the day. It's the Greek
debt crisis or jobless figures or whatever, as if they actually knew! To me, it just makes them look foolish.
The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don't know anything about.
I wonder about the idea of those who equate trading to an evil endeavor. Sure the shenanigans by corrupt firms and those responsible for the housing meltdown and destruction of 401ks and many entire lifetime savings probably warrant such vehemence. But how is retail trading all that much different from an individual market stall in biblical times. (or a modern reseller buying wholesale inventory and selling it to retailers for that matter). Merchants and traders and investing existed in the biblical world. Job was a merchant/cattle/landowner. Even a form of crops futures contracts probably existed at the time. Small businesses in the U.S. are notorious for ruthless tactics and abuse of employees especially during our current recession times. And all the tax loopholes. But it seems like the general media has put the burden of "new jobs" on the small businesses and in essence let "American" globalized corporations abdicate responsibility to the country. The multinationals with their 2 trillion in profits have already invested overseas and shifted away 30 million middle class and manufacturing jobs that will never come back. Anyways, this ignorant bias against retail trading may cause retail trading to be outlawed one day, except for the fact that more and more individuals are learning and trying it out. But eventually some Obamanomics movement would wish to destroy it.
