What in your opinion constitutes a good platform design? I specifically refer to the usability of it, layout, the way it unfolds, etc. This is a question for beginners because I want to see what you seek, and for advanced because you have been through a number of platforms.
Please let me know what you like about your platform and where you would seek some improvements. Please refrain from discussions about the instruments you trade, and the back end of any platform like feed, speed, back testing capability, etc. The idea is to discuss design and usability features.
You can cover topics such as visual appeal, how the profit and loss tab shows, buy/sell button location, DOM on one platform look versus another. Lastly, after you discuss these thing above, you could also state if you believe the appeal of a platform and ease of use can make a difference in the profit or loss of a trader.
PLEASE don't take this opportunity to put down one platform or another, I am interested in an objective discussion and positive feedback.
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
I am not a beginner now, but I remember well, what I was looking for when I was a beginner.
(1) Charting: Handle minute and daily data. Stability on loading data. Data should be correctly displayed / merged for futures contracts. Compatibility to data feeds.
(2) Coding: Simple language to code indicators. See QuoteTracker or ProRealTime.
(3) Order Execution: Simple way to execute via ChartTrader or DOM. Bracket Orders.
A basic need i had was to get a platform that could expose its datas to Excel or be able to act as a server of datas. Alas, Ninja is not capable of such a task. Metatrader is one of these applications that can do this in a relatively simple way.

NinjaTrader do not have Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) capability. This indicator helps one to build a DDE connection between NT and any client application like excel. NT acts as the server and sends the data.

and to add, most other softwares allows you to expose last, volume etc data. with nt you can expose any data say data for your custom indicators etc etc.
Thank you for all the feedback. I want to share with you why I have started this thread: interface design is one of the most important things when it comes to human interaction with physical objects. Anything from a mug to an IPad has been designed, and sometimes a good design is where we ask "what other way would it be?".
As an ongoing support for my customers, I wanted to make a bunch of videos emphasizing what are the key features of some key platforms. Rather than guess, I thought that I would ask this community that I consider to be savvy,honest and at the same time has some traders that are highly technical. You have raised here some really good points, but stability of feed, and the ability to export to Excel are not features of interface design.
Let me give you a good feature of interface design: Ninja starts out as a plain vanilla platform while you have the ability to choose a DOM, charts, or whatever else you need from the file menu. However, I wish the DOM could be a bit bigger and the ability to change fonts (maybe it's something that I did not discover yet as a feature). The way that order execution shows besides the charts also creates ease of order placements.
Interface is often something that we learned to live with because it is something we are provided with.
Visual appeal is something that is personal and at times hard to explain. If there is a designer of any kind on this site, your feed back would be appreciated.

Right-click on an unsed part of the DOM (say the space to the right of the SELL column), select Properties. Under General expand Font. I set mine to Bold. You can also change the number of price rows and other good things here.

You mentioned exposing the data to Excel, TT has that. I'm not much of a developer...but if you can use excel, you can use the tt rtd links with live data.
