Can anyone give feedback on using Starlink for a primary internet connection for day trading...

specifically for Scalping?

How is it working for you?

Howdy! I am looking forward to some replies as I am getting closer to ordering up a dish for Starlink. I currently only have 12.5 meg to scalp futures contracts. It's really not too bad, but 100+ speeds would be better. So, it will be interesting to see if folks are happy with Starlink and hopefully they are not having any interruptions.

Thanks for posting.

I believe what you should be looking at is not speed but latency. Starlink’s latency is averaging at 40-50ms according to reviews, so if your 12.5mb offers lower delay then you will not benefit from switching.

Thanks for the input. I just ran Ookla. Idle latency=48 and download latency=80. This is with Centurylink and an ethernet connection. Then ran a second test Idle=168 and download=78

I'm not sure what idle latency is. Will do some research.

@redbarn,

It sounds like your latency is no better than starlink's, maybe worse. So, all good. Idle latency is just the round trip delay if you're doing nothing - which trading will normally be as its a tiny fraction of your broadband bandwidth. If you download a movie at the same time, latency will rise so be careful of that if tight timing matters to you. You can probably measure it with ping & control downloads - I get no rise in my latency if I download at less than 40Mbps on my 50Mbps link but it goes from 5ms to 80ms very quickly when I go over that limit.

Anyway vantojo asked, "how will starlink be for scalping" and the answer is "it depends." Typical reaction times for a visual stimulus are about 1/4 of a second. That's 250 milliseconds (ms) so Starlink's 50 ms doesn't add much to that. But if you've automated your scalping and your computer reacts very fast it might matter that starlink took 50ms and a fiber connection only too 5ms.

So.

1) how long is your scalp, do you react directly to a visual stimulus with a market entry order and does an extra 45 thousandths of a second matter to that.

2) look up ping test and find out how long your current round trip delay is.

Kiwi, thanks for the input. Just tested and it is 76ms.

Scalps are usually around .45 minute to 1.5 min long.

1/2 limit orders and 1/2 market orders. I have not been frustrated to this point with Centurylink stability, just the slow-ish download speed. We had fiber til we moved out to the boonies.

Our next door neighbor has been on Starlink for 4 months. I will ask him to check his latency/ping. He's getting around 100 meg download.

I built a pretty fast PC, monitor is 5ms/165, so happy with that.

From what I am gathering from the last 2 posts is that the ping is most important. With that said, the reason that I have considered a faster connection is that I can have an order sitting on the chart with chart trader and in the blink of the eye, that order will disappear before the candle reaches that location. So, I figured that data (printed candle) is delayed due to my current 12.5 meg connection.

I do realize that a strategy can be adjusted due to internet speed, but at this point the faster the better.

On a side note, my wife grew up on the Gold Coast. Been there myself a couple of times.

What's your current ping time to your brokers server?

Does order placement follow seeing some things on your charts?

Ask your neighbour to also ping your brokers server.

Will check that latency. Procedure is new to me, but always something to learn. Will do that later in the morning.

I do not understand this question: "Does order placement follow seeing some things on your charts?"

Just checked latency this Sunday morning:100. Will send a few live orders out tonight when the market opens back up.

I use Starlink in Ireland and it's fine for my needs. I trade NQ and don't have any 'lag' problems. Currently connected to AMP using Quantower and the ping/round-trip time is 30/20ms
