I have actually experienced a loss of service in the middle of a trade, and it is worthy of panic.
In line with all the other suggestions, if have UPS's on all equipment. Trading program on multiple computers, cell phone set up to use as a hot spot, and if all else fails I have automated my stops and targets so that if I do lose service it's just a matter of seeing the results of the trade later, and not being able to fine tune the trade, but at least I won't panic again.

Be sure to have a stoploss in place and that IT IS HELD AT THE EXCHANGE. Your broker will be able to tell you if this is so.
Together with all the advice already offered this should keep you safe.

Hi, David, long time, no speak... I always knew you were a mensch.

LOL... while quickly getting out the dictionary to see if a mensch is a good thing.

Thanks, Nice to hear from you again.

The simple answer: Always place the stop order (before/during/immediately) after placing the entry trade.

Check with your Broker to be sure, but many FCM's these days will "House" the order on their server, it's stacked in the deck waiting to be filled. This way, if you lose power/connectivity, whatever...you know you're good.

Obviously, you should have all your Brokerage info handy. Be aware, calling them (even if you could find a functional phone) doesn't mean you'll actually get through. Depending on the scope of the outage, half a million other traders are going to be trying to ring the same Broker you are.

A good Surge Protector with Power Back up will also buy you precious seconds if things up and down the street go dark.

If none of that works, you can always try my Zombie Apocalypse go-to...smoke signals, maybe even carrier pigeons (if they're not infected).

Good Luck!

on 9/11 was there any warning given before the exchange shut down? Was there enough time to close out? Worse case scenario, exchange closes, SL on server, unable to close out for some reason or other (may be broker not reachable, networks down, etc.) and at the next open it gaps in the opposite direction. But then again, a car could hit me when I walk out the door. All risks cannot be avoided 100%.

- System
1. Back up system with power: Charged Laptop with platform and broker connection set-up and tested. make sure you update the machine with necessary windows and platform versions, weekly is recommended. Make it a weekend exercise.
2. UPS for your desktop

- Internet
1. Cellphone 4G - Cell towers have UPS and are most likely survive grid power failures. However in an event like mass power outage, networks may get congested. so be mindful that - prioritize taking risk off and not manage the trade.
2. So laptops have a built in wireless card - get a USB Wifi adapters for your Desktop and plug-in, install necessary software and TEST it with cell network (i.e. set-up the hot-spot, passwords and connect so your machine remembers to automatically connect with it.
3. There are cellphones available with multiple sim cards, if you want to have two cell networks as for back-up.

- VPS - Go virtual/ physical leased machine on the cloud and stay connected with it via cell phone

Found this Today ! seems hardware friendly to provide a wired solution with desktop. UPS power solution required with this. but a good fail over idea.
cant post links yet - so youtube search "Connect a cell phone to a router"
