What happend to volume 1997-2002?

Why did volume increase (exponentially) after the inception of the ES?

Im not exactly sure why SidewalkAerobics, perhaps it was because ES was used as a hedging tool. Perhaps it filled this niche in the market. Would be good to hear from someone who knows for sure
best

Thanks John.

The larger question is will the volume change again. I'm asking about the cause so I can look for future effect.

I'm also looking forward to hearing from others.

I would suspect it is the rise of electronic and algorithmic trading along with decimalization.
