For those organizations who have not yet applied the security update, we suggest you immediately deploy Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010.

Firstly, grain of salt, am no tech by any means...
Here's what I found y'day that was most useful: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/the-wanna-cry-attack/284338a7-1eb3-4237-8571-f3de36236fa6

(Edit: Thanks, I see Cory's link is what was in the Most Helpful Reply. )

Also, fwiw, the tech I take my computer too thinks highly of Microsoft Security Essentials, and my understanding is its updates will have prevented the wannacry.

And another fwiw, I see MalwareBytes (which I also have) notes in their forum that theirs also stops this. https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/200762-wanacrypt0r-ransomware-hits-it-big-just-before-the-weekend/

If you don't have a public IP and don't share an SMB volume you can't be hacked this way.
Of course installing Windows updates on a regular basis is highly recommended.

I run Norton Internet Security on my computer .... always have been for many years. I was supposedly protected from WannaCry by Norton. In any case IMO its worth investing in a decent anti-virus sw.

I already have and had Microsoft Security Essentials which I agree (have also been told its the best) besides being free and I have active on my computer with its autoupdates.

I great bonus is that the updates of MSE create restore points which can come in very handy.

The reports I read did not make it clear that MSE would protect against the wannacry.

What I haven't read is when did NSA know of the vulnerability? has it been many years? Did NSA actually create the vulnerability - that is see the weakness in the Server Client and create the exploit code?

judging from the code comments I say they did. A real hacker is not going to be bother with line by line commentary but gov't worker do.
