Great Setups at 5:00 p.m. cst and 7:00 p.m. cst.

Good Evening,

So I was doing some analysis on my charts yesterday and today, and a re-occurring thing kept happening , and that was ...... I kept on noticing , that during the hours of 5:00 p.m. cst. and 7:00 p.m. cst. , that a good number of my charts ( scanning across various timeframes on all Future products ) showed some nice Price Pattern setups

These are the kind of setups that I look for no matter the timeframe chart that they occur on ( it can be a Daily chart, a 3 day chart, weekly chart, monthly chart , Tick chart(s) ) or what I'm trading ( RB, GC, HO, NG, ES, CL, ZW, KC , etc.. )

I haven't yet looked this up to can confirm,
but I am assuming that, the reason I am seeing some great setups at these two time periods , is due to the fact that Other Major Exchanges/Markets are opening and starting to trade at these two specific hours ...... The Asia and European markets perhaps ?

I am giving serious consideration to entering these trade setups from now on when I see them ...... even though the trade entries will be on US based Markets ( Futures )
I realize that at 5 and 7 p.m. cst. , that this is after hours for US traders

Are there any concerns I need to be aware of , for entering trades at these times ?
Gaps ?
Wild price swings ?
Not getting filled on my Entries period ? ..... unless I just go in with a Market Order ( any Slipage issues to be concerned with ) ?

Thanks for the insight
Just don't want to sit these trades out , but want to make sure that I have all of my bases covered since I will be entering these trades after US markets have closed, but when Other Major foreign markets are open ?

Thanks much - Michael

your plan kind of surprised because few years ago, I used to do 6E at this time , 5-8 pm cst, but it did t go well for me , as I had backtested and sim tested. but some evenings, there were good moves and some were range bound
if you test both trend and range bound days,
I havent seenthat many folks prefer this time, but you can make some
good luck

Hi emini_Holy_Grail ,
I wanted to ask you , if the reason for these setups is due to the other major Markets being open and trading ( the Asia and European markets )

And since the times for these trades are after " Over Night " margin requirement time span ..... the margin to enter a trade on any of the Future products, would be at Intra-Day margin rates correct ?

Thank you again for your reply

I believe Asia (China/Japan, not sure about India) opens around 7PM CT, however Europe doesn't open until 2AM CT.

I open a lot of my trades during this time period, however I am a swing trader and generally hold for several days. The biggest issue is liquidity. I know that ES and GC are fine, possibly CL too, everything else would need to be studied to see if it trades enough volume to be worth it.

Hi wirechild,
I appreciate your reply

I just did some research trying to find the anser, and you are correct with the Asian markets... opening at 7:00 p.m. cst.

Still can't figure out which market(s) are opened and traded during 5:00 p.m. cst.

I have seen to many setups occur at this time of the day, to disregard it , so surely something that has a high amount of Volume traded , is being traded ?

I am also looking to start swing trading positions in the Futures , and hold them for days to weeks at a time

My only issue is the Overnight Margin costs , so I will likely stick to swing trading the miNY and mini versions of the Futures that have them ( CL, NG, GC, SI , ZC, ZW,ZS, etc.. )

Have you figured out a way to swing trade and hold these positions for days and weeks at a time " Without " having to have the Overnight Margin amounts " covered " in your account ?
You don't close out a trade at the end of regular market hours .... wait for the 30 minute period ( 3:30 - 4 p.m. cst. aka Overnight Margin requirement hours ) to pass , and then re-eneter your positions do you ?
This way only having to have the Intra Day margin requirement amounts in your account ?

Thanks again for your reply - Michael

that's correct, that time when Asia, Australia opens, so if you do their INDEX, or currency, would move well
margin is considered intra day if you open after 5pm and close before next day 4.15pm. if you hold, becomes over night
hope it helps

that's good. I am thinking of doing swing on ES/YM. what stop would you have for swing for these Indexes or whatever you do swing

I don't use set stop amounts. If I put in a stop it is an area where I know that I am wrong or that I don't want the risk on. Generally I will exit and wait for a better place to put the same trade back on if my belief has not changed.
