Hey guys I am moving next month and would love some ideas how I can best utilize all my monitors and desk space once and for all. I have looked at computer desks but none suit me. Maybe the best thing is a plain L-shaped desk top with my monitors raised above one another. Any ideas would be appreciated! Where to buy it too. Seems you can't buy anything plain anymore.

If anybody wants to post a photo of their trading desk? It might help me and all of us out. I am tired of being cramped. I have 3 computers and would like enough space to fit 4-6 monitors.

Hey longboat.

Well, first I'd recommend trying to see if you can rotate your monitors to portrait mode instead of landscape mode. But, finding a nice monitor stand that holds two or three monitors per stand that also supports portrait mode is about impossible. Also my monitors have buttons under the panel, which is no big deal in landscape mode, but in portrait mode it means they aren't flush.

So for now, I just took my stands off and have them rigged on my desk with some rubber pieces on the bottom to hold them in place. Works fine, I've had no problems, but I definitely want to find a professional stand. I only have three monitors, so six is going to require something creative.

Here is mine:
https://futures.io/trading_member/big-mike-albums-office-desk.html

You can see I have a standard desk, it's about 60" wide. I used to have a corner desk and L-shaped desk, but the way it was laid out the monitors went in the "corner" and that doesn't work well for LCD's, in my opinion, because they are too far back to be legible. So you end up moving them forward, losing the benefit of the L or corner (used to work fine for CRT's).

Mike

Mike that is a nice setup though! Thanks for posting the photos. I only really need 3 that I can view easily. The others can be farther away or on the other part of the L-shape I guess for me anyway.
I like seeing others work desks though so keep them coming or uploading!
Thanks
Rob

Here's a few links on monitor stands:

I'd like to have a nice photo showing my setup like Mike has, but for now, these are just stored in my "Favorites" folder til I'm ready to make the purchase. (Soon...)

Kirk

ps, Mike, what are the dimensions of your monitors? Looks great in portrait mode. Also are any multi-view or 3 stand alone systems?

Three Acer 22's, connected to (2) GeForce 9500GT's, all one system - my other systems are all headless, I connect to them from here.

Apologies if this is a bit of a grave dig but it seemed like the appropriate place to post pics.

I'm always evolving my rig/desk setup but right now I'm pretty happy with it. It's actually a reasonably old rig (close to a couple of years) but it hasn't missed a beat and does all I ask of it. I might throw a quad core 9550 at the motherboard soon but it's more of an indulgence as it's not needed that much the way I use it.

Vital Spec's
2.4Ghz Dual COre
4Gb Ram
Dual Gigabyte 8600 GTS.
Gigabyte MB
3 x Samsung 226BW.

Also dual boots Ubuntu x64 8.04.3 which will become my main OS if I ever get NT running under wine. I have also had Windows 7 and Leopard running very nicely on this machine. At one stage it was actually quad boot Vista, Leopard, Ubuntu 9.04 and Window 7.

Also thinking about a TV tuner card to feed the spare video out and another screen but maybe a tuner card in the laptop is a better use of resources.

Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1520 and is the backup/on the road machine. I use Synergy to control the laptop when I'm at my desk and it usually has CNBC or Bloomberg web stream and a news feed on it.

After much hunting around, the desk is an Ikea Galant mash up and I tried many different chairs before settling on a relatively cheap Ikea Markus.

In a previous job I built a room based on the 70 Series from Argosy. What can we build for you? - Argosy Studio and Technical Furniture. They are nicely put togther, and they have some built specifically for computer setups. Roughly $2k.

That and a HK Aero chair and you are set!

Right now I'm using an old Ikea desk.

Well I recently moved and I went friggin' nuts with Liquid Crystals.

Took all the better LCDs in my possession and came up with this.

LordAlfa's trade journal: Welcome to my LCD madness

It fits exactly on this 1.8m Ikea table. 5 Panels. I still have 3 more ports to spare. 2 HDMI and 1 DVI.

I am think of replacing the centre LCD with a 42" HDTV. The resolution will be lower. These 24s give me 1920 x 1200. The 42" HDTV will only give me 1080i but the HDMI port will be handy because I will not need separate speakers, the TV will output the sound from the HDMI port.

Here are some pics of my desk, I have done quite a few mods to the desk itself to silence and hide the computers it holds. The main workstation is in a danger den torture rack acrylic case which is mounted inside the slide-out printer cabinet. CPU/board are watercooled, all radiator fans are efficient/low noise and on the sides and rear of the desk are mounted large (150mm & 250mm) fans which provide high airflow (~100cfm) with very low noise. I also have quikRoof (aka dynamat) sound deadening material lining the insides of the desk so there is almost zero noise when the cabinet door is closed.

Of course my wife thought I had gone off the deep end when she came home and saw me boring holes in the solid cherry desk but I am pleased with it

There is also another computer on the other side (headless linux server) as well as external arrays for hot swappable SATA and SCSI devices and battery backup/UPS gear

I tried using an HDTV as a monitor once but it was WAY too bright even on the lowest brightness setting.. hurt my eyes after 20 minutes or so of looking at it up close.

I like your setup thought lordAlfa, interesting mix of landscape and portrait orientations. =)

Oh no, another geek with water-cooling, SLI video cards (not water-cooled, too bad ).
I'm trying to fight the noise too (but the noise won the last battle).
Anyway, nice workstation, nice work.

LOL. I have gone the other direction in the battle against noise. I have fanless gear where I can and my case fans are as big as will fit but I'm running two in series, making them spin at half speed. Funnily enough my CPU fan is now my loudest fan. I can actually hear it change speed when the load winds up.

A fanless power supply and a Zalman (or similar) CPU cooler should make my box almost silent.

Love the "built into desk" computer sefstrat

Thx, yeah it took me several iterations to get things how I wanted with my watercooling setup. Good radiators make a world of difference (thermochill or feser x) since they perform well with low speed fans.

I actually did have my video cards in the loop but then I upgraded cards and have been too lazy to order the new blocks.. really wish they would standardize the nvidia form factor..

Right now I just use the nv tweak utils to lower their fan speed so its not too loud, it works out alright since I don't really play games, primarily use the cards for CUDA =)

UltraMon is great buy Hydravision from ATI works great too. I have 9 desktops in total. So I just changed the wall paper of each desktop differently. I just switch according to whichever the app is on.

LordAlfa, I use an open source package called Virtual Dimension for virtual desktops. Most stable and usable one I have come across. I found many other programs had way too much fluff. If you like the way Linux uses virtual desktops then give it a try. Closest I have found for the windows environment.

Combined with Ultramon, all my window management and virtual desktop needs are met perfectly with tiny overheads.

I put these fans on my NVidia cards, but the nv tweak I don't hear them. If plan to use use CUDA, it might become a bit noisy, these king of fans is a cheap/easy to mount solution.

I want to water cool my 3870X2 cards. Need a full cover block from EK but I am not sure about water cooling because of the maintenance issues.

Radiator fluid turning to muck and so forth.

Initial setup can be a PITA but maintenance is not really an issue, just use a good nonconductive fluid with algae inhibitor etc..

This is the one I use: Feser One - UV GREEN - F1 - Coolant - Danger Den

Some people recommend you change the fluid every 6 months but I have been using water cooling gear for 4-5 years and only changed the fluid twice, haven't noticed any problems.

You can also use water or antifreeze + algae inhibitor for fish tank but IMO the nonconductive fluid is worth it. Last time I moved one of the tubes came loose in transit and I didn't test them long enough before hooking it back up, had a slow leak so not immediately noticable but the next day my motherboard was soaked. After taking everything apart, cleaning with alcohol and letting it dry out everything worked perfectly again thanks to the non-conductive fluid =)

For any more than three monitors you could maybe consider some of them wall mounted. My company just designed a control room for a chemical plant where the operators need access to 8 monitors. The ones that were used frequently were on the desk and the others were wall mounted on the wall and from the ceiling so that they could be referred to as needed.
