There is not ONE trend in an instrument. Every timeframe has unique, oftens opposed trends. So you have to define your desired time frame first. You can use the ADX indicator to get some more insights.

As the above post says, what time frame are you referring to? That's an important part of the discussion. My response it based on trading intra-day or daytrading.

In general, it's said that currencies can trend heavily, followed by metals, energy ag products. IMO indexes are the least trend-friendly on an intra-day basis as they just love to chop back and forth. Stocks can also provide great trends, if you are in the stocks that are trending.

Unfortunately this is not a simple answer, otherwise everyone would be a trend trader that just trades the trend producing products. Every product will produce chop, it's a matter of how/when you are able to recognize it and minimize the damage.

Trending Inst:

All indicators (and there are many) trend to some degree but how they accomplish this separates them into mostly three categories, Momentum-which measures rate of change in price[ CCI],Oscillators-which fluctuates above and below a center line or inside set levels [ADX/ADI Vortex] ,and Lagging-which are trend following the price action [ MACD] and a simple moving average crossover [14 & 44]. I tend to use one from each plus a simple MA to aid in trying to make a balanced decision in my entries and exits. So far I've found them to complement each other with some success...Gapper

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
What i ask about is what kind of instruments (ES,GC,ZN......) you think trend heavily for a Daytrader and for a Swing trader. I wasn't asking about indicator.

It depends what you're referring to as a trend. If you're looking from a very short term basis holding trades for less than a couple minutes I'd probably say CL or GC give the largest movements such as in the definition of directional volatility. Most indices like YM or ES tend to move much slower and sideways, but ultimately appear more steady in direction.

The question you're asking is almost comical in nature if it weren't so absurd and frustrating as a day-trader to define a trend let alone become sharp enough to trade it. Instruments ultimately trend most when there is fundamental forces driving them such as news or reports.

Grains and Softs have some excellent short term trends inside of longer term ranges.
