2009 is the first year I traded futures exclusively. I'm curious about how to handle the 1099-b. Since there is no number in box 2 (proceeds) in the 1099-b (did not sell any stock), I'm not sure what to enter in my tax software. The 1099-b I received only lists a number in box 8 (Profit or loss realized in 2009) and in box 11 (Aggregate profit or loss) Do I just enter the Aggregate number and put the cost basis as 0? Do you guys enter each and every trade in the tax software?

Since this is the first time you are doing it, I would strongly suggest to see a CPA. There are very knowledgable and helpful people on here, but do you really want to file your taxes based on what some guy on an internet forum told you?

Most likely the best advice. It just grinds me that something that should be simple like "what was your profit? pay these taxes", is instead made difficult by what seems like intentional obfuscation.

I was just looking for some guidance, like "look into form 6781".

Thanks though.

Everybody is different. Talk to a CPA.
