for short term/scalping, like those retraces when it chops, say in downtrend, it retraces higher before it continues downtrend. may be, I should call something else, not counter trend

TradeChartPatterns.com - Check what this guy has to say about that . Scalping rule #1 is critical . I got a lot of faith in him and he wont steer you wrong ever .

yes, I like what Cory said,

try using Bollinger bands with double tops / bottoms where the first swing high/low is outside the band and the second is inside the band.

target would be back to the middle sma - (or just above just in case)

you describe a pull back (trade with trend) trade, check out Mike's nexusfi.com (formerly BMT) Collective MA, CMA for short
