Automated we are looking at a universe of 15 futures here Once you automate the question is not how many to watch, but mostly which make sense (must e liquid enough etc.), which correlate (no sense in trading US stock markets in 10 different contracts) and which you can optimize and backtest for (which is pretty much a money argument - currently we are falling behind on this side due to ONLY 4 machines used for testing, but as we moved last week to new offices.... in about a month we will have settled and handled most secondary upgrades, then I can theoretically get another 30 or so, from the planned cooling and power allocations.
For swings, I watch 3 (using weekly, 4hr chart) and for day hedges I have 16 up (only 5 min. chart).
After all is said and done I trade 3-5 total but have done more in the past especially when day hedges are
biting hard...see the signal, I pull. I like having my eggs in different baskets.
I read the action on swings and my day hedges are all mechanical entries. I try to stay mechanical
on the exits but sometimes I use discretion and exit earlier than my mechanical target.
I posted every single one for over a month in my journal if interested.
I traded 10-15 different instruments then. (just an estimate, I would need to look to confirm).
Right now I'm on 1 mechanical long. Long /6J .012692 target .012708
UPDATE for the heck of it: Target hit, limit out. Trend continuation swing short entry .012707
target 012670, 012650
