Lornz - Thanks for your comments. It just seems that the international protest against the oil sands is way past the point of being rational. To a degree, I support the environmentalists as agents of change. Industry does not always arrive at the best solution for society by itself.

The land issues and the water issues associated with the oil sands should not be international issues. Any of the first world countries (or developed countries if that is a better term) should be quite capable of managing these issues internally.

The only international issue should be air emissions which is primarily CO2 emissions. Banning bitumen exports to the US or to Europe makes no difference to the global CO2 emissions as China will be more than happy to purchase the "dirty oil". In fact, CO2 emissions from bitumen are lower than from coal but I guess that China's oil consumption will be in addition to coal, not instead of coal.

So, to me, the bottom line should be agreement on the priority of reducing CO2 emissions and a global focus on how to do this. "Dirty oil" is just a distraction.

@Deucalion

I didn't know you were a roughneck?

Thanks for sharing your experience, interesting stuff. I've never even been on a patch, and I don't know much about it. I'm quite fascinated by some of the technology employed, though.

The "Badger" is definitely a cool concept/project. You pointed out several It seems that they may finally be able to get it off the ground:
BXPL

Maybe I need to buy back in? I made a ton of money on that on their IPO in 06. It went from NOK 20 to 60 in a couple of months. Then I sold out and traveled the around the world. That was my MO when I started trading: Find new technologies I thought would lure out enough hopeful suckers to get a nice initial boost of the stock, and, if I were lucky, have a lasting impact on the industry in which they operated. I miss those days, now all I see is risk, risk and risk...

"necessity drives innovation". Isn't that the truth? A lot of bad things can be said of fossil fuel extraction and wars (yeah, I just lumped those in the same category), but both has spurred invention of some very useful technologies, which later have been instrumental for the advancement of modern societies.

Now, if only the US would release the flying saucer technology they stole from ze Germans after WWII...
@Lampert

Yea, I think we basically agree. I'm quite concerned with pollution in general, not only CO2, though.

The world needs more Teslas, but it seems that there are only Edisons out there...

When people would bad mouth Canadians... On my first international business trip decades ago.. the first advice I got was... Don't tell anyone you are American... Tell them you are Canadian... Nobody hates Canadians...

Canada messes up the landscape on a patch the size of a postage stamp... Americans really get with the program...

NASA picture of a Mine in Utah ....

Now if they would just finish that pipeline ... life would be good.... well, in Texas anyway ...

I'm just a simple man trading a simple plan.
