Hi everyone,

I am a complete new beginner to trading and in the process of learning about options and futures trading. I am currently undergoing training with Alphaoptions.com and digging my head into it. I would love if anyone can share there experience how they started and how long it took them to be confident and start trading with actual money. I have signed up with Thinkorswim and currently using their platform to practice what I learn in the training.
Thank you

Welcome. optionalpha.com is a great site. I really like them and it's amazing it's all free. I also am practicing with a paper money Think or Swim account. You're off to a great start.

Some of the better parts of this site you need to pay $100 buck-eroos to become an Elite member. I think it is very worth it :-)

Greetings!

I was born in 1961 and work as a software developer.
Looking to implement the holy grail system (really!) if I would ever find more time.
My tool is Tradesignal, which is OK as a package.
But I would prefer something with a "real programming language" behind it.

If my holy grail fails, I consider offering a paid service: You get to see what I am trading and you just do the exact OPPOSITE.
You will be guaranteed to have ONLY winners!

Thanks for having me here.
I'm a stockbroker based in Nigeria with more than 10 years experince trading the financiao markets. Keen areas of interest in forex and currency options.
My strategy relys on a good understanding of fundamentals, market sentiment, seasonality and technicals. I'm also an author on tradingview under the alias "dynamiquebd" where I post my trade ideas.

I believe I will get the opportunity to network with great minds in this forum

Thank you.

Happy fourth of July! I've been in the futures markets since the mid-90s. Retail, institutional etc. Back-office, front office, and mid-office. Then after 9/11 I found myself without a job and did some studying on proprietary trading as it has always been what I wanted to do - albeit with a hedge fund type set-up. I never had the connections to join or start a hedge fund so I used my own $$$. I traded pairs in the equities for a while with moderate success - meaning I did not blow up my account. Later I started executing (wouldn't really term it "trading") theta plays with some really great results. But I'm not in a position to risk my own funds so am considering working towards getting a funded account with TopStep - any input on them is welcome. So far they have been great to work with. Being flat at EOD is something very new to me and the adjustment has not been easy. I've just started a practice account and find I have one pretty good day, followed by a flat day, followed by a horrid day - get stopped out on every trade. Looking forward to hearing from futures traders and hearing any input. Good trading y'all!

Hi Everyone,

I'm a long time lurker, but looking forward to being a more active member. I'm a former options trader that was always trying to get to that magical PDT status (25k) but only made it once before blowing the account on tilt. I love the "option" of being able to do multiple day trades with futures and not being so "married" to a position because you only get 3 / week. I'm looking to implement more discipline in my system and manage tilt better.

Hello Futures.io!

I traded for a Prop firm in Chicago from 2007-2013 spreading USTs. I took some years off and as of 2019 am trading outright futures.

Glad to be here and am already grateful for the resources on this site.

I haven't read her books, but Carley Garner has a monthly column in TASC magazine (Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities), entitled 'Futures for You". I find her writing to be clear and easy to understand for beginning and experienced traders alike. I recommend checking it out.

Hi all,

I'm looking forward to getting involved in the community.

I am from the UK but I live and work in Dubai, UAE. I've been trading since about 2018. I've traded everything, you name it, but I've been trading /ES and /CL for the last couple of months and my consistency is improving. I'm still prone to an horrific day which can wipe out the previous ten but I'm addressing that by changing broker. I was previously with IB but they have no max daily loss. (I also HATE their UI.) I've now moved to AMP Futures, will use Multicharts, and use a Rithmic datafeed. Rithmic allows AMP to implement a max daily loss. I'm my own worst enemy so if I can remove the ability to revenge trade or compound the mistakes, it will make a huge difference to my bottom line.

While I'm becoming more consistent, I also recognise I have a lot to improve. Dare I say it, I think I need to become a much better technical trader in terms of settling on 1-2 patterns that work for me day-in-day-out, the signals, correctly setting my stop and profit taking etc. I basically think I need to make my trading more automated rather than gut. I think my 'gut' has a place in my trading but I know that if I become more methodical, I will be better for it.

Take care all!

I'm trading FX, Futures (demo), spread and margin. Once I figured out that using M30 (FX) and 1 hour TF are much more useful than shorter time frames my success rate improved significantly. For trading FX my challenge is to know when to exit my trade. Setting SL and TP at the time of my entry is fine but often I was kicked out too soon so my gains were smaller than they could have been and my losses higher. I tried not to set SL and TP and exit when when my indicators said to close the trade but often price whipsawed against me quickly and I was in a losing situation unless I watched my trade non-stop. (For futures I watch my trades continuously and I set my SL / TP levels at the start). Long story short - My FX entries are fine and I'm successful >90% of the time catching the trend. My challenge is to find a method to exit my trades without watching it continuously.

Hello everyone!

I joined last week, i was looking for a good for murrey math lines and i stumbled upon an article written by big mike. I am a noob in the industry, i am still learning and still trading on a demo. Used to see commercials from traders, indicators, strategies but i never dared to see what was trading about, people used to warn me and tell me to stay away from this game and betting , guess no one of my friends had a proper idea what that is.

I am willing to learn and put in the hard work i wish i can find helpful people here.
I am glad i came here and hope to learn from you.

Looking forward to interacting with you.

Hi All,

I have been coding for years and years, but just discovered trading a couple months ago. The fun and the tragedy. I started with scalping the e-mini, made some money, got all cocky and lost even more. So I thought it was time to put the code skills to work, and have been paper trading and back-testing strategies with NT so I can build my account back up. There is a lot to learn.

A big kudos for putting all the work into this site, it has been very helpful so far and I'm glad I found it.

Hi all. Been trading since 10+ years, all the types of financial products, but in the end mostly derivatives. I made all the mistakes possible, sometimes countless times until I learned and my progression is still not complete, which sums up well the the passion around this activity. Thereís always room to improve.

Hopefully I can learn a few tricks to become profitable.

@KingSharky @xplorer in this case it would be better to reactivate the original account instead of having a duplicate. Would maintain the history of the account as well.

Hello,

My name is Patrick. I am retired and am looking for ways to generate a little extra income to help my kids with college and getting started, as well as making my wife and I's dreams of beach living possible. I have been trading stocks on and off for more than a decade, but I have recently ventured into options. So I am trying to learn a new skill set. I have been through TDAmeritrade and Tastytrades courses, so I am looking forward to trying this out.

I am currently trying to find a journal that will track all of the differing options strategies so I can measure my profitability and hone my strategies for success. I have learned that what does not get measured, does not succeed.

So hello to all, and I look forward to a great journey.

Welcome aboard

What do you want to trade? E-mini or Micro Futures?

If itís futures, do you plan to use NinjaTrader 8?
You need a better platform than TOS or Tasty for Futures IMO.

Have you looked into topsteptrader.com ?

Ohhhh I just realized your into ďoptionsĒ.
At first I read it as what are my options?

I have very little knowledge about options trading.

Cheers

@mytpq, One example by a trader highly regarded in fio:

There are other option threads you'll see, just thought of this one in particular when you mentioned tastytrade.
Good luck. Was in Ormond Beach area couple of years ago, can relate to love of ocean. Liked it better than the gulf side tho I liked the town of Dunedin itself on that side, though was told going further south would have been better, cleaner water.
If you're a dog owner, Flagler I understood was one of the best dog-friendly ones.

Hi, I'm Betsy and new to ninja trader. I would like to learn how to use strategy builder and possibly turn strategies into a bot.I trade options (my account is upside down) and stock. I'm playing around with ninja platform right now and noticing the cursor doesn't shows high/low, time and date when is placed on individual candle. How do I change it to shows all those data like TOS? I'm brand new to ninja and futures so any tips and helpful information is greatly appreciate. TIA, glad to be here.

Greetings to all,
My name is Bert and I just started learning / wanting to become an active trader since July of 2019. I brought some books on day trading by an author of another trading chat room and ended up taking a course on trading which began my relationship with Tradestation (the instructor's preferred platform). The course was ok but I quickly realized to truly day trade stocks DAILY, one had to avoid the PDT rule and I am not there yet. I really have not gone live but I started playing with micro e-mini's with a small account with AMP Futures.
But a wise man knows what he does not know, so here I am seeking knowledge and insight from many here.

Welcome @Phors! If you want specific NinjaTrader (NT) help, check out the NinjaTrader section in the Platforms and Indicators area of FIO: https://futures.io/platforms-indicators/. People tend to be very helpful around here.

Gday

Iím a 41 veteran , who got into trading after been made TPD by my injuries.

Been in stocks for a long time, now 5 years doing CFD, FX etc. I like auto trading as a side , but day trading is what I love.

Like most traders I was cocky and made big and quick money and lost.I made 300K in under 24hr and lost it all in 2 hrs.It became therefore a addiction to be excellent at trading (never will I say I have meet those standards) and it became my outlet and new drive after becoming disabled. Psychology, emotional, risk management

I wanted to learn and then i was asked to manage friends accounts and veterans. Now, always learning, but I spend my time freely teaching trading at the veteran center , along with meditation, fitness, cannabis education , and a variety of rehabilitation skills.

Hello,

Let me introduce myself ... My name is wisemond.

I started, a few years ago, with the swing trading on stocks ... then I touched the options a little for a while ... I also tried myself in the Forex market, mainly with an Expert Advisor that I bought on the mql5.com site. My Forex account at the time was with the London broker ActivTrades ...

For a few months, I am interested in Futures, which have the advantage of being a regulated market, compared to Forex ...

In addition to my account with IB, Interactive Brokers (American equities, Options), I recently opened an account with Edge Clear, led by Morad ASKAR (FuturesTrader71), with FCM Dorman Trading ...

For the moment, I trade Futures in a simulation environment on the TT platform of Trading Technologies ...

I still have a lot of questions about the Futures markets, being a newbie in this area ... And that is also the reason for my registration to this Forum ...

Here, I hope that our exchanges between members will be fruitful, constructive, and enriching !!!

Best regards,

My name is Kiril and I am a new trader. I have started this journey after the Covid-19 made an impact on my career. I am an airline pilot and if things continue this way I may find myself on the street looking for a job. The idea of trading futures came to after I got introduced to the PDT rule. I decided to give it a try with MES and ES. As of today, I haven't lost that much money except for books and courses. There is so much information out there that choosing a product is extremely difficult. I have come across this forum by searching for reviews on a particular product. I must say I am very happy to be here and I hope to learn and contribute here to the best of my knowledge and ability.

Thank you guys for all the help.

Yes, American living in Japan for 11+ years. Married a Japanese lady and we have 2 kids. Life is good where we live in the mountains.

I have not traded Nikkei futures. But since your post, I have started to look into possible brokers, located in Japan. The trading hours fit me better than USA. I would only trade the E-Mini and I wish they had Micro.

Cheers!

Hello all,

my name is Patricia and I live in Germany so sorry for my bad english. I came from a Google search about different platform comparisons like NinjaTrader, SierraChart, MultiCharts, eSignal etc. I am glad to have found this site because I got the impression it is really well visited with lots of helpful postings and information. At this point I want to express a BIG THANKS to BigMike for bringing this up -thumbsup-

I have basic/intermediate knowledge but since a few months I decided to really dive seriously into the trading. Currently I trade only CFD because of the small account balance. I'm interested in the future market but in 'the future' I want to stay at CFD and paper trading until I feel comfortable and make persistently profit. My main focus is in BackTesting and that's why I'm looking for a platform to stick with and try develop my own strategies for backtesting.

Looking forward to any helpful comment. Thanks for listening and good luck and success with the trading.

Hello Everyone,

I am excited and happy to have joined this group. I have been trading for 3 years, and started focusing on ES futures about a year ago. As most people that try their hand at this, it has been a rocky road to say the least. I am kind of in a vicious boom and bust cycle, where the booms are smaller than the busts. I keep going through long slow grinding growth periods, followed by huge drawdowns in my account. I have a strong appetite for risk, and have trouble getting out of losing trades. I can identify my problems, but have trouble breaking out of them. Anyway, I feel I have made some big breakthroughs lately in finding the Holy Grail, by accepting there is no Holy Grail, and everything works sometimes, but not all the time. I feel that my edge has to come from my discretion and grinding out a risk model that makes sense over a long period of time. I am hoping to gain some knowledge from the more experienced, and hopefully network and find some new insights, ideas, and most importantly, some accountability friends and fellow traders. I am too stupid and stubborn to quit this trading thing and thought this seemed like a good place to be. Thanks for taking the time to read this, I just wanted to say hello and thank you to everyone it advance.

Best Regards

Hello everyone.

I'm a London based software engineer by trade. I've dabbled in algorithmic trading since 2013 and I've built various backtesting engines for tick and candle based strategy research. I've tried market making strategies, HFT strategies, TA strategies. I've built custom APIs to talk to exchanges and brokers but I'm now settling on a simpler setup and slower trading. I'm building a portfolio of algorithms trading various indices. It's been a long and difficult road to travel down and I've made a _lot_ of mistakes along the way (), but I'm slowly collecting dividends on all the time spent in in the market.

Looking forward to share what I know and learn from everyone.

Cheers!

Welcome! I suggest the writings of Kevin Davey (@kevinkdog around here), with respect to algorithmic trading and diversification. My wife (a fellow trader) and I are currently working on non-correlated portfolio diversification, with our current algos strategies. We use TradeStation and MultiCharts.

Hey everyone, brand new here. I'm a little over 3 months into my trading journey and am really excited to have found this community. I started with options and stocks, but once I discovered futures, things really started to click for me. Right now I strictly trade the ES; I'm just trying to learn it inside and out rather than stretch myself too thin trying to learn everything at once.

Currently working diligently on my psychology, emotions, and limiting beliefs. Also, working on building my trading system so I can start to trade with a probability mindset, rather than the mindset that I came from where I'd live and die by the outcome of each trade.

Thanks for creating this awesome community, can't wait to dive in!

I trade mainly futures and occasionally forex. I do part time because I have a full time job. I am still learning. I am happy to be here.

Hello, I'm BrianDreamTrader - because my ex-wives called me a dreamer (like that is a bad thing!) and I've always dreamed of becoming a professional trader. So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I've only been at this for a little over 20 years now and it will be 21 by October, I think! By Halloween, I'll have 62 years of living although there were vast stretches of that epoch that seem like dead air to me. But, I'm out of my prison cell now, writing a book and learning to trade for real. Thanks for having me and for any future patience or tolerance you may develop for me in the near future. As I like to say, "Enjoy!"

Hi. I started swing trading in the late 90's. I got distracted with life and went on to other things. I started working from home in March. Now I have much more free time, with no commute and building to maintain. My wife and I have been self employed in the education field for the last 20 years. Since life has simplified for me, I wanted to get back to trading. I'm totally new to futures trading, but looking forward to learning. Thanks for the forum!

My name is Ray. I live in British Columbia, Canada.

I have been studying trading for the past several months. I am especially interested in trading the Micro E-Mini Futures contracts. My favourite YouTube channel is Don Singletary's channel.

Being Canadian, the choices are really limited for trading futures. I recently created an account with Interactive Brokers. I tried adding futures to my trading permissions and was informed that I need a new worth of 100,000$.

I am able to trade stocks and ForEx. So, I will concentrate on trading these in my paper-trading account.

I welcome any suggestions, comment, advice.

Thanks.

Gentlemen,
Hello. I hope to relearn how to trade. Did it back in the mid 80s when at home trading was first starting up. There was no internet back then.
So now we have it and complicated platforms; while back in the day it was a special hookup to FNN to get a data feed and watch a ticker all day.

Wow, this may be over my head and ability to comprehend. We'll see. So many technical things and new terminology.

Really don't have anything intelligent to contribute.. Will try.

Good luck.. gotta go prep for the hurricane. Bye

Forex is a good starting point for a beginning trader, considering the low barrier to entry. You can make a lot of mistakes with much smaller risk profile and learn how to take losses and wins. Believe me, you will make mistakes. You are in a good place here. Good luck!

Hi all together!

I still haven't found, what I 'm looking for.
At least not the finance forum, I am dreaming of. Perhaps this one, will be the ONE.

In terms of trading,
the situation is a little bit better. I am always on the search, and from time to time I find a new concept or at least a profitable variation of an old strategy.

Ironically I am an "apprentice" here.
Hhm, an apprentice term of 30 years is quite some time and implies actually good education. In all those years I have found lots of ways to lose my money, even worse not only mine.

Thanks to the internet and falling transaction costs, I finally could start to apply concepts (I had studied at university) for my small wallet. And by simply being active in the market,
using the different product ranges and services of different brokers, I even ended with real arbitrage opportunities, which finance my everday life now.

There is only one main rule I can derive from my experience, NEVER take an UNCOVERED position.
Either I am running direct spreads (inter and intra) or if I have some single bets in my portfolio I always add some kind of general VIX-position to the portfolio.

In my heydays I (my shop) was even registered with CFTC as large trader.

Now I am feeding on diverse online brokers, who are more interested in volumes than in correct pricing and risk management.

One of them accused me of "unfair trading", because I bought two contracts offered by him. One contract was inversely priced relative to the other one. Everybody familiar with Jensen's Inequality could do only one thing, buy as much as you get. Finally we agreed, I would be a "good" boy and never do it again and I may keep my profits. Keeping the profits, having at least one chapter for my memoirs and avoiding unnecessary publicity made me consenting and not calling the Ombudsman. So, the contracts are still at offer,
(bid ask may have widened a bit), go for it!!! A little hint, it is a FCA regulated broker.

Luckily there are other brokers (bigger ones) and more subtle variations of my ARBconcept, that I have a decent living just from this strategy. Additionally I am consulting on different forms of CARRY ARBs. The simpliest version, selling fx-forwards at one broker and hedging currency risk by taking opposite positions with a swap free broker.

My current main projects are;

1) Variance ARB with VIX-futures and any kind of option
2) Expanding the carry concept into the field of vola-premia

So, that's all to know about me.

Looking forward to meeting you

Hello everyone.
I live in Japan and I am interested in systematic forex trading.
regards,

Welcome.

Just be careful with algo systems in the forex market as there are many data issues.
The FX market doesnt have a centralized source, so data literally changes from broker to broker,
so performance of a system changes from broker to broker.

Just my 2c

Look forward to learn more!

Hello all,

my name is Patricia and I live in Germany so sorry for my bad english.

Hi, no worries, I have been six years trading till I have become fairly consistent by a deep understanding in how the market works, looking closely to MP and Vwap. Keep on the good work.

Hey folks! Iím new to futures. Glad to have found this forum! I like futures because of the tax treatment, no PTD rule, great liquidity and most of all the simplicity and discipline of focusing on a small number of instruments (ES, NQ) rather than hundreds of stocks and ETFís. Iíve been watching ES and NQ for months and from what Iíve read here and on reddit the DOM is going to be my strategy of choice.

Right now Iím a bit overwhelmed with brokerage, data feed, trading tools and platform choices. I am definitely a minimalist when it comes to trading so keeping it simple is one priority. I know I can go straight to the FCM for data but I like the idea of using a broker since Iím new and will likely need some guidance/customer service plus, I believe that given the volume Iíll be trading (maybe 10 contracts per day) the commissions will be cheaper. Speaking of commissions, TD Ameritrade is $7 per round trip, thatís bonkers!!

Iím leaning towards optimus or tradovate for brokerage/data feed and jigsaw as my main trading tool. It seems that both of those IBís have great free platforms so I can start with one of them before springing for Jigsaw. I use TOS for swing trading and options so Iíll likely use it for big picture charting when needed.

Glad to be here!!

I recommend my broker, DeCarley trading out of Las Vegas - customer service and questions answered all the way - great for a newbie experience

Hi Big Mike,

I have little trading experience and would like to learn more about futures. Unfortunately, I am not yet a successful trader at the moment. I hope for better times.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of this group.

Hey, everyone! My name's Mike, and I've been trading stocks casually for about 20 years. I'm a business analyst and data architect for a large software company in the Seattle area, and just recently started playing around with Futures trading during COVID. I'm really enjoying it, and hoping to learn more over the coming years. It's very fun and addictive! Thanks, and I hope to learn more on this forum.

~Mike

Hey everyone! Thank you, Big Mike for the forum and to the moderators as well for keeping the quality high. I've lurked for awhile but just joined because I want to participate and contribute. I trade the MES and ES. I've been learning to trade for the past year or so, full-time over the last 8 months. My methodology has evolved quite a bit over time through experimentation and studying.

The areas that I have concentrated on most are price action, order flow, and Market Profile. My trading at this point is based almost entirely on trading price action, but I do refer to Market Profile as well, particularly in my premarket analysis. I'm looking forward to continuing to learn and improve!
