Hi

Im from montreal, I would say that I trade on and off the market since more than 10years : I spent many hours to study at a school and, after that, I did a lot of backtesting with 10 000 thecniques/strategies, etc

I started my real trade for real later...

Since that day I like what I do.

So I here to share with you my experience - the best and the worst!

Hello there,

So in the 90's, I was trading the big, bad S&P with some proprietary S&R levels I had developed which were uncannily accurate. But as the ES became bigger and bigger, for some reason those S&R levels became less accurate.

The truth is, I was always a people's person and had wanted to be in the field of children's education, so instead of learning a whole new method of trading, I took the opportunity and became a teacher, and later a principal.

But my love of trading always stayed with me, and I figured that sooner or later I'd come back to it.

Which is now :-)

Greetings everyone!
I have been wanting to trade - doing so on paper and in my mind only - for years now. Recently I quit my job working for the government when, spontaneously, I just absolutely could not take it one more second.

So I jumped in. Made a little, lost about four times as much. Right now I'm on the razor's edge of not quite having enough money to make enough money to survive but am highly, highly motivated to succeed. Been studying so much I see charts when I close my eyes.

Recently paid an idiot tax by trying a service that purported to advise traders in real time and help them via consulting. The idiot tax wasn't the fee - I quit in the trial period - it was the stock I ended up in.

My educational background is political economics but college was a very long time ago. Since then...well, that was a long time ago.

Looking to learn about e-minis as a first priority and stocks as a second priority (thinking that microcap/small cap are the only ones to offer enough volatility to really utilize the small amount of capital I have available.

Love my boy. Doing this for me (cause I really want to) and him (so I'm not gone 14 hours a day)

I love the introduction "the secret is with in each of us" totally agree with it. I also love the idea of sharing with like minded people ideas and support between us. It creates a synergy that expands to amazing proportions.

I am new to trading, I have only done 10 virtual trades and only made money on 1, so translated I lost on 9.

I have taken 1 online course and signed up for a work shop in November, but I am looking for more places to learn, books to read, and buddies for support. So all your suggestions are highly welcome.

I have been wanting to get into the market for 3 years, everybody, I really mean EVERYBODY as told me not to do it and most of them have a horror story to backup their advice for not getting in. It scared me and drew my back for a long time, but it has never left my mine, it keeps crawling and crawling back, I really want to do it.
I find that there are people who do make money, lots of it, and who others crash and burn fast. So I guess that knowledge and experience are definiatly the difference. So finally in July 2,015 I started waking up @ 4:30 am to study and read about the market. I am going to be great @ it no matter what it costs (thank G-d for virtual trading ).

This morning I found you guys and hope this community becomes another solid step on my way there.

wish you all an amazing day!

Hi all,

I've been registered a while now, so forgive my lateness please.

I've traded on & off for several years now, got lulled in to a false sense of security about my abilities during 2010 ish, hard to lose that year

Since then I've carried on trying to learn TA when time allows, time appears to be a big problem of mine, when work dries up and I have time to get back in the swing, things start to "click" only for me to find out I've slid backwards down the learning curve the next time work slacks off, I suppose I'm gradually getting there but like many feel if it was all I did I'd "get it" a lot quicker, such is life, keep on keeping on!

Regards
Hoosier

Hi everyone. My name is Josh and I am from the US. I have been trading for the past 9 years or so and just moved to futures from forex earlier this year. Over the years I have tried pretty much every trading approach imaginable but finally came to the realization that simpler is better so with that in mind I only trade cocoa, sugar and soybean oil contracts and trade using a handful of well placed candlestick patterns on the 15/30 min time frames. I trade using TOS, commissions are a little high, but its a great trading platform for me.

I look forward to participating in this great forum.

Hi there, thanks for the welcome message
I've been demo trading for just under 2 years, the last year with The Day Trading Academy on the E-mini.
My reason for joining this forum? Well, I was looking for some threads on the best platform to choose. I was demo trading with Ninja (awesome platform imo) but now I've reached my 'demo allowance' and their brokers (Dorman, & Phillips) don't want to give me an account - I don't match their financial requirements :-(
I've been consistently profitable over the last 4 months (just under 2 points a day - really good enough for my wants) and I so want to start trading live... but I need a platform that can take DTA's proprietary indicator set - and the only one they recommend is Ninja - bah!
Anyway, thanks for all the great information in this forum; I hope I can be of service to someone as well as acquire some more valuable knowledge.

My hero btw, is the late great Mark Douglas - may he be blessed a thousand-fold wherever he is now :-)

Ali

I'm a day trader that has traded for 9 years in U.S. stocks/ETFs.

I just recently moved over from another platform to Ninjatrader. I am not a programmer, but have self-taught myself easyscript type code, to the point that I can write full blown strategies, exit systems, etc. However, I'm a real novice at Ninjatrader's C# environment. This forum has been a real help in getting started with Ninjascript. My heartfelt thanks to all the contributors and to BigMike.

All the Best,
CurtisC

Hello futures.io. Haven't posted much but have been trading on & off for the last 20+ years. Thankfully I've gotten progressively better at not losing money and, most years, am a profitable account for whichever broker / platform I happen to be on (currently mostly ToS and TradeStation). I'd love to meet fellow trading nerds in / around Austin, please ping me here if you'd be interested in grabbing coffee / drinks sometime.

Hello everyone. I am new to BMT/futures.io. Would like to inquire if anyone can advise on the following.....

How do you get "Average daily volume" column to populate in Market Analyzer. I am looking for a way to monitor current day volume versus an average day. Question further is there an average daily volume at the current time of the day. For example a daily volume at noon doesnt mean much unless we know what the average contracts traded at noon are known. Im just working this out such that I can set indicator sensitivity based on current day volume versus an average day. In other words, if todays volume is slow, i need to increase sensitivity. If todays volume is screaming, I need to decrease my sensitivity in order to filter noise from false signals. Any help appreciated. I am using NT7 with NT continuum as data feed.

I've been pursuing trading in and out of the markets since 2000 blew up a couple accounts (seems like a requirement for most) it looks like I finally got it I still need to work on psychology which will be the topic of my next post but I feel like I finally assembled the minimum requirements to make in this career.

I just realized I've been a member of the site for over 2 years have learnt quite a bit from BM and the more experienced guys hope I can give back in the future as I do the transition to full time trader.

I started investing (First in Myself) in 1996 when I realized I was 75K in Negative Net Worth. I started with some simple mutual funds, then opened my first broker account with E-Trade in 1998. I started with 5K in the E-Trade Account with a few long term investments that I had garnered from the Motley Fool site and through some basic research on the E-Trade Site. By the year 2000 "I was hooked". I made it a point to deposit monthly into my brokerage account along with the mutual funds, and I now had a positive Net Worth and the needle was moving. In 2004, I started to do some shorter time frame swing trades and found myself always looking for the next good trade. I also started reading on investing and trading, from technical trading, to proven techniques from the well known, and digging into the internet. I also maintained an attitude that long term investments pay and shorter time frame trades were exactly that, trades. Late in 2008 and 2009, I started to exit some of my long term investments, my E-Trade Account was shrinking, and the mutual funds were showing monthly negative results. I felt something was wrong and had worked to hard to get where I was and I "Knew" I had to so something but didn't know what to do! By May of 2009 I was 100% Cash and some "Money Market Funds" (that could loose money, which I didn't know). We all know what happened after that.

In 2010 I started to slowly look for investments, and decide to stick with well known stocks that I could easily identify with, and that also seemed like they were "On Sale". I bought $GOOG, $AAPL, and "Re-Entered" stocks like $DOW, $O, $GS, and $COP. 2010 was interesting because I wanted to get more of my account into stocks but was "Overwhelmed with information", but somehow found "StockTwits". Wow, who knew that there were so many traders out there, it didn't take long and soon I was finding "Too" many sites. Information overload. I did subscribes to a few "Premium Service" sites, and very few offered a return on value. I also realized that I was as good as the mutual fund sites and took responsibility for my "Assets". I was all stocks, except for my 401K and Annuity Pension Plan which I was only "Allowed" to make certain selections, but I made sure I understood those selections.

Today I am Semi-Retired, in my early 60's, and enjoy trading for both investment returns and to generate income. I control the direction of all my asset accounts. My Brokerage accounts are with E-Trade and Trade Station. I trade Stocks, Options, Futures, and some Forex (but limited). I still employ a strategy of 1/3 Long Term, 1/2 Swing Trade, and about 1/6 in Futures and Forex. I do use my swing trading accounts at Trade Station for Day Trading, and for Monthly Income.

One of the many things that I have learned is that you need to Study, Learn, Practice, and Adopt. The markets are in a constant change as new methods become more followed. I also subscribe to the Premise that Herbert Dow gave to us in that "If you copy another one's process; it will not translate into success for yourself, you need to make it your own". With that said I think I have rambled on long enough, and will look to try and contribute in some small but meaningful way.

Hi! I'm a new trader looking to learn futures trading to start my trading career. I got a degree in EE&Cptr. Engg. and have done some programming and product management.

Working in NYC piqued my interests in the market and I've been following them since the 2008 crash. Recently I decided to take the plunge and quit my software job. I am going to trade full time once I go live. Starting with the basics of manual price action trading, I'm hoping to get to some automation in the future. The long-term goal is to replace my salary from the software job with my trading

Kumar,

I wish you Good Luck and Fortune. I would think it would be hard to replace the income from your Computer Software Employment with Trading and with Trading Futures. If I could offer some advice it would be to start slow and learn, as it is not uncommon to experience negative declines the first couple of years of active trading. There is a plethora of information out there, that one can become easily overwhelmed and "Then" lost by constantly changing their approach and strategy (trading plan and more importantly Investing Goals). Do a little research onto what platform you want to use, with your skill set, I would look for one that allows you to program indicators and other attributes, such as Trade Stations Easy Language. There are other platforms out there that have programmable features. Many Choices. There is a long list of caveats, I think the most important is to have "Attainable Goals", both long term and "Daily", and the "Need" to have an active Trading Log. The Log is an indispensable Resource & Tool. Good Luck.

Hi All

First off thanks to BigMike for creating futures.io and all the other members who post valuable information here.

I traded for two years unsuccessfully until I found a system (day trading) that stands up and I am beginning to turn things around. I'm not there yet but now realise the importance of a disciplined approach as well as paying attention to the psychology of trading, say nothing of a detailed plan and keeping a journal.

Looking forward to learning from you all and eventually making positive contributions myself.

Good afternoon, I am a 40+ woman with a family, small child and daytime job. I am trading e-mini with a passion trying to get better and eventually consistently profitable. I plan to participate in the discussions here to exchange thoughts/ideas since noone in RL can relate.

Hi ,

I am here to learn how to trade futures the right way. I traded futures before but lost money as i never used any systematic approach. I hope the experienced traders can provide the right guidance to succeed.

Thanks

Interactive Brokers work with Ninja. If you don't meet their requirements you probably are under funded and should wait until you have the funds.

Have been trading the mini ES on and off for 2 years. I would have blown out my account if I hadn't had a mentor. Need to improve before I trade live again...

Kumar

Hi Kumar,

As Robert M said, I also wish you the best of luck and success. I would only caution you to be prepared for a possible long learning process to consistent profitability. Not to discourage, but to encourage a healthy, realistic, and balanced approach to the awesome prospect of being a trader. It took some of the best traders I know of many, many years to accomplish the goal of consistent profit. Five, ten years, maybe longer in some cases.

All the best,

Jim S

Hi All,

Much thanks to Big Mike for creating futures.io! It's a great resource for traders and developers. I've been doing software development for around 15 years and strategy and indicator development with NinjaTrader since around 2010 and have a few years of trading experience as well. I look forward to contributing more to the community when I get a chance.

Cheers,
Eric

Hi,

I would like to introduce myself to this forum.

I have about 11 years experience in trading markets. About 7 of that has been professionally in foreign exchange.
Currently, I have begun to trade my own account but have found that following my own rules has been much more difficult than it was when I was a pro

My goal is this: I am a discretionary trader looking to create EasyLanguage code to manage the risk of my positions. I have no experience in coding.

Anyway, I hope I can offer some of knowledge and hope I can figure out coding.

Hi Mike and all members,

I have been on and off futures trading for 10 years. No really blowing up any accounts but mainly a busy work load that takes me away from trading.

I enjoy the mini's. Not so in love with stocks.

I find my biggest enjoyment over the last 6 months is building different custom indicators and such and trading of off these. I have found that take a lot of the emotional roller coaster out of the equation. The biggest thing that this has help to correct is my hair trigger reaction to risk avoidance which has been damaging to my trading.

I am happy to be part of this forum and I hope to attain a lot of new ideas and skills and I hope to contribute equally.

Thanks

I became interested in investing when I started college in 1983, and my first job after college was as a financial planner. We were really sellers of mutual funds and insurance. When the stock market crashed in October of 1987 mutual fund investing went out of vogue, and I lost my job.

For a career I did other things, but my fascination with investing grew, and eventually brought me to the book How to Buy Stocks by Bill O’Neil. What was so attractive about this book was that it covered selecting stocks and then lastly, the timing of the buying of them. It was mostly fundamental analysis, and then the last “M” of his CAN SLIM method, market general direction - technical analysis of the market itself.

From there I started down the difficult road of technical analysis. And that brought me here.

Hi Mike and All,

I am a recent college grad who has been trading for the past few years. I started trading stocks with my buddy and made some quick money but was bored of the "buy and hold" mindset that we had. I bought some courses and started learning about futures and day trading strategies. I made some money trading crude oil and thought it was easy, then quickly lost all the money I made and some.

Very excited about this forum and I hope to be able to contribute as much as I will take away.

Best,
Craig

Has anyone figured what causes an overfill in an automated strategy?

i started out on thinkorswim, spent a couple of years there and outgrew the platform/decided i wanted to get serious from the dev perspective. i have experience across the futures complex; most of my focus has been in US bonds (mid/long duration), energies, and grains. i started doing progressively more development and have decided to tackle automation and proper dev work. currently i am developing in TT as i build out my C# skills. i plan to maintain portability as i move along. i look forward to interacting with the countless bright folks here; already i've seen lots of great stuff.

Hello everyone,

my history seems to be about the same as many on here. I blew up one account before I took any classes or learned anything, expensive mistake that I am determined not to allow to happen again. I have less than a years worth of experience in trading. I trade only futures (due to 24 hour availability), not sure this is the best area to be trading. my ultimate goal is to be able to quit from my 9-5 day job, but getting to that is proving to be somewhat of a challenge. i am looking forward to getting familiar with this site and soaking up as much information as I can. as of now, i am trying to get a good swing trading strategy established, due to work. i am beginning to wonder if this choppy and wild market is not to conducive to a swing style. any pointers and help will be gladly accepted. i started by subscribing to numerous people and come to find that not a lot of people know what the hell they are talking about. needless to say, those subscriptions have been cancelled. also fell for the "newest and next best indicator" peddled by a lot of gurus. now, i have only a momentum indicator and view candlesticks. now, after reloading another account, i seem to be gun shy. hopefully this passes and I really think i can do this and want the flexibility that trading will allow. anyway, once again i look forward to interacting with all of you.

Hi Everyone,

I discovered futures four months ago after trading ETFs for several years. The shorter time frame forced upon me by the highly leveraged futures has been challenging to say the least. Getting a bead on market direction has been like herding cats. Nonetheless I managed to make $7000 in two weeks once I got the hang of it.

I read Market Wizards, took Adam Grimes course and thought I was doing well until the markets shifted. I lost everything I made and then some and have now switched to SIM. Luckily I did not wipe my account, unluckily I have no job now so the brokerage account has become my safety net until I find a job. Meanwhile, I am trading SIM everyday, doing very badly and happy it's not real money at present. I do like Big Mike's suggestion to trade ETFs if not enough Capital so I may do that as well once I see something good.

I question myself for wanting to learn a trade with a 95% failure rate, but I feel like I can do it given enough time. I watch the price action for hours each day and hope at some point it will tell me something good. Thanks for this site!

Hi,

I've been planning on contributing to this site and helping other traders after I become a 'big success.' It hasn't happened yet, but I have gotten a lot better...I'm losing money more slowly. I figure that I do have some knowledge to contribute. I am focused on day trading the 1 minute and 5 minute NQ Nasdaq100 futures. I would say my major rules for beginners are common advice...always use and honor your stops, and find a way to define the trend then only trade with the trend.

Hi everyone!

A few years ago I was trying to trade forex with MetaTrader (mostly lost money). And when my broker went bankrupt, I stopped trading.

Now I'm trying back to trading. I like NQ and CL and I'm using NinjaTrader. I can program indicators/strategies for NT.

I want to build my own trading systems with strong rules, but still can't do anything profitable.

Thanks,
Vadzim

Hi all,

Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum seeing how much I have learned from here. I don't really expect anybody to read this right now, but it could be a cool genesis to my trading career should it take off. This might be a bit long.

I am an ex-professional poker player who decided to quit while ahead. I quit mainly because I didn't like the direction my life was heading; being in casinos, the hours, the hustle aspect... just wasn't for me. I had been doing it for about 10 years before I quit.

I had built a decent bankroll and wanted to do more with my life. I ended up getting a MA in teaching and have been a teacher for 4 years now. While life has been more socially fulfilling, I do not have that true passion in teaching. I have been exploring trading since before poker but never really got into it. This last year I have been looking at futures intraday more seriously. I discovered this forum and sapped as much information as possible before even starting to open a trading platform. I actually knew about it when it was called BMT but didn't take it too seriously back then.

After spending about 10 hours a day for the last 3 weeks (every morning before work, and every minute after), reading threads and watching webinars, I have gotten knowledge that might have ordinarily taken years to gain. I am obviously still a total noob, but I am confident. When I started SIM trading I was an obvious failure. I started looking at holy grail methods, specifically SuperTrend/Rampage, Perry's Method, then the Wizard's Den. I started messing with my own tools and quickly gained, what I perceive, as an edge. In my 10 hours a day SIM trading, I do market replay of random days in the last year and have found that I am *extremely* profitable. I convince myself that this is beginners luck when I look at the people struggling at TSTs combines, or just what industry standards are for profits. Also looking at the whole meme of only 5% of traders are successful, I am constantly doubting myself. There is simply no way that what I am doing is sustainable.

Perhaps there is a chance I am a natural at this, as I was at poker. More likely I am lucky. I recognize that. I will continue plugging at it SIM trading until I am absolutely convinced. I might do a journal, if I am convinced of my edge trading.

Some of my biggest influences in order of power in influence; I trade CL:
Adam Grimes using data to "prove" what has an edge and what does not
Al Brook's Price Action / webinars - elusive price action thread
Random line theory thread
@Fat_Tails work on different indicators, his threads about them
@big_mike 's trading journal, reading from start to finish. Fascinating advice and his own progression in trading.
@lancelottrader 's crude trading journal

On SIM, I average between $400 - $1000 a day, trading 3 contracts a day. Largest day is around $3000. Since I have gotten my current setup, I have not had a single losing day (starting 10/28). At this rate, as some people have said before, I should be working for GS. I realize this isn't realistic, I am not a miracle worker, and I am probably lucky.

My setup:
I SIM CL trade on NT7.
Start looking at the market at 7:25 AM till volume dies out in the afternoon.
Using 60 min and daily on one monitor
5 min, and 800 tick charts split on another.
I mainly use the 5 min to take trades. I prefer trend trades but sometimes counter-trend is too obvious to miss.
5-25 tick SL, 10-30 tick TP. Never worse than 1:1.
2 contracts is first TP then I move my stop accordingly for last contract.
I take on average 1 - 4 trades a day. No max profit or max DD. I take what I see.

Indicators:
anaBetterVolume with overlay on the 5 min (amazing for low volume/churn bars)
anaKeltnerUniversal (for my counter-trend trades)
MurrayMath (a good psychological tool for me, I take it with a grain of salt)
PriceActionSwingPro (a crutch because I am a noob still, a good training wheel)
TickStrike (exploring for trend trades)

I have learned all of this in about 3 weeks from here with basic market knowledge beforehand. Let's see if I am full of bull for the long-term (I probably am) or if I can turn this into a profession. I read so often that psychology is the most important part of trading. Poker has conditioned me to probability, variance, drawdowns, tilt, confidence, and self-awareness. If psychology is the big part of the game, I think I might have a chance.

I expect to go live in 3-6 months with a 100k account. I might journal.

Letsssss see.

Hi,

I'm hoping this forum will serve as a valuable resource in my trading. I have some experience trading stocks and forex. I dabbled a little bit in options and I'm brand new to trading futures. I've joined this site quite a while ago but this is my first time posting.

Hi !,

I'm a beginner in futures trading. I try to look for valuable information that will make my journey through the world of trading "less bumpy" I read some threads on this forum and I see that I can find here a lot of interesting topics (some of them most certainly contain what I'm looking for). I am also interested in an elite section of this forum - I think there is a lot of useful tools, recordings and additional information. So I'm glad that I'm here.

Futures trading is like a bad woman that you just cannot resist. I've blown up 3 accounts with off the shelf systems, expensive training and can't miss strategies. I keep telling myself to just walk away but I can't, I love the action of a successful trade.

I am fixed on learning how to trade, controlling my emotions and only taking what the market gives without forcing the action. We shall see where this goes. I am sure that I am in familiar company.

Hi, I'm Phil, actually became a member few months ago but didn't post an introduction yet.

Have learned a lot over the last months, but unfortunately also a lot of useless stuff. I've decided to move away from pointless indicators and to study order flow and supply and demand. Also became an elite member here, hoping that I have to wade through less noise posts and maybe help others as well.

I'm a programmer (CS) so maybe I'll come up with some useful code to share with you all later on. Have made a simple market statistics indicator with VWAP (w/ SDs), mode, mean, median etc. already, actually to test some ideas from the 'Market Statistics' thread series on TL (turns out that series is based on some false assumptions IMHO). But you already have VWAP indicators here, and it's not polished enough for general purpose use anyway.

Hi all........ just got the link activation email today, been trading off and on for about 15 years predominantly in equities. I am interested in exploring futures trading and found this site while researching online....

I use the TOS platform exclusively...don't know if it's good or bad thing but it has served me well..

Looking forward to reading learning and hopefully someday having enough knowledge in this area of trading to be able to share, for right now though please accept any "newbie" questions I might have with regards to trading futures.....

Thanks in advance

Hi all,

Recently, I was interested in some expensive automated trading systems and when I used a search engine to look for for reviews, it came up with threads on this forum, which convinced me not to buy any of them, so thank you for that!

The trading journey started for me several years ago. I've read many books and a lot on the internet, including paying for some education in the beginning. I've experimented on a demo account with many different systems and methodologies but have been trading Forex live on MT4 for about a year, using simple, mechanical systems that I developed myself. At the end of that year I was at about breakeven.

I'm not sure where to go from this point. I had been hoping to learn something about algorithmic trading so that I could automate and backtest trading strategies. I think I feel more comfortable with a more mechanical rather than a discretionary approach. I'm on NinjaTrader now, which I love and am slowly getting to grips with the technology.

Best regards,
BrightSound

Hi All
First time user.
This forum is an incredible example of collaborative energy with the main goal of helping each other.
I have always lived with the principle-for you to have 1 doesnt mean I have to lose 1-its not 1-1=0 but 1+1=11(and I have been incredibly successful) TG

THANK YOU TO ALL for a unique experience of observing a great example of a better world( especially to Big Mike).
I hope I one day can add to this forum in a meaningful way.

Hi everybody, I'am using this website since about 3 years and it helped me a lot. I use Ninjatrader as platform and sometimes it's hard to find indicators because the majority is made for MT4. When I started FX trading I blew up my account a few times. I found out that trading short timeframes is not for me and after using H2, H4 and daily time frames I made finally some progress. Still I'am learning and this forum helps me a lot.
Regards, Anett
