Hello Group,

Well, I seem to be at the stage where I've just blown up, tanked, depleted...whatever...my account, for the first time. Not very pleasant but hopefully a good lesson and a little negative reinforcement to not do it again. Not sure I'll be much help to anyone just yet, but I appreciate that everyone contributes.

Gary

Hello Everyone,

1992, LaSalle St, retail bond sales, learned equities, tech biotech boutique investment bank, nasdaq trading desk, ran desk, penny wide mkts, CBOE local, 9/11, off floor equities, futures. I guess I've been around a while. I've tried to approach things with an open mind, evaluate everything, retain what is useful and let pass without harm what is not useful. I have been at least twice as lucky as I have been good. I talk more about my losers because there reside the seeds for victory.

I've decided to be "open book" with respect to what works for me and how I approach trading for three reasons.

1. I am a program language dummy and I need the colaborative help of guys who posess attributes that I lack.

2. I want to share what works for me with people that might benefit from it because I think we all should have a shot at things I sometimes take for granted...like working 4 hours a day from my den in boxer shorts.

3. It is a fact that anything shared will in an instant have the bias of the reciever layed over it, making the secrets of the ages safe for another thousand years.

So, experienced successful tarding professional in search of a mutually beneficial colaborative effort returning value where value has been received.

My name is Dan, nice to meet you.

Hello everyone. I'm new to this blog but i'm enjoying it very much. There is so much knowledge here. I am a long time equity trader ( 35yr) but a beginner to trading the futures market. I have been giving a go at it for 2 years with erratic success. My account is up and down. My goal would be to trade successfully on a weekly and monthly basis in order to increase my account. I know realize that i need to stick with my trading plan and adhere to my rules and setups. I have been all over the board so to speak. Trading all different commodities I have been trying to trade breakouts following the Taylor Technic. I know realize I need to stick with YM or NQ and stay within my trading parameters. Just wanted to say hell to Big Mike and all here. Thanks, Stones. p.s. Goooooooo Browns.

Hi all... I just came across this forum and it seemed the best forum for traders. I mainly trade stocks and just started couple weeks ago. My strategy is simple. Get in at the bottom and get out as soon as the stock move up 3 or 4% (sometimes hold longer depends on the market). Sometimes it takes couple hours and sometimes couple days.

I usually focus on few stocks to trade... no scanners no signals just my own judgement. My little experience taught me that being familiar with a stock by following it is the best way to decide when to get in and when to get out. I started with a small account to get familiar with trading and feel more comfortable. Last two weeks I made 15% profit after fees and commission. Not too bad for a starter.

One thing I strongly recommend day traders to keep in mind is their entry point. Your entry point is the most important factor to make profit. Unless you 100% sure this stock is going up soon don't get in. Find another stock don't just give it a try.

welcome to the largest trading world alive....

hope your personal conviction and personal trading style will bring you even more bacon together with other bread and butter as well....

for some other traders like myself, trigger point to get in, is considered equally important as other significant factors in trading, such as.... the personal trading plan, the cumulative stats, the trading strategy, the entry and exit points and lastly the reward/risk management plan....

but if you wish to consider the entry point as most important factor in trading.... that is alright too.... for you are the master of your own ship.... and your bottom line will be the only living proof....

wishing you the best in trading....

Hey guys,

I am new to this forum and recently downloaded NT7.
I am no veteran in trading, but I have some experience. Prior to findning NT7, I coded my own software in C#, where I implemented my own strategy. Basically, it was a market scanner that gave buy signals and sell signals to those stocks in my portfolio. Now that I have found NT7, I am gonna take this to a whole new level. As if my wife was'nt tired of me talking about this before .

So, I live in the south of sweden, 34 years old, recently married.
My goal is to find the simplest form of strategy that will yield a >1.8 profit factor. And after reading Van Tharps thoughts about curve fitting, I have to do this without optimization.

I am sure I will find a lot of useful information on this forum.
Should I, from time to time ask a stupid question, bare with me, as I am still learning.

Cheers!

I have been trading full time for 3 years. First 2 years as day trading stocks. Results not worth mentioning. Switched to trading Futures , specifically crude OIL Futures and has not looked back.

Here is a link which describes some basics of the system , I use. It works on any volatile instrument. Will not work on non volatile trading instruments. For example , MSFT, MO as example of stocks.

ACD Method Intro.

I will be happy to share my experience should you have any questions.

hey there, this is my first time as a member of a forum as I found most of them to be places where any thing positive means you are a vendor and anything negative you are slated as a loser, however I found that after looking at Big mikes that the community here seems to be a nicer bunch of people.

I have been trading now with consistent results for 2 years and before that was a big loser for 7 years,, I trade the ES mainly and look forward sharing my experiences.

I am 48 years Old and live in the UK where I trade from home, been a hard slog I have to say and spent way to much money, but thanks to some good friends and a good mentor I found what worked for me..

good trading guys

You can't post in the Vendors/Reviews section until you have 10 posts, everywhere else is fine.

yes, by all means, when you are prompt and ready, pls do share your trading experiences with us.

whether you are an extension of a vendorship or not, it really does not matter in trading; cause it is the bottom line that you can show us.... that really proves if or when your trading arsenals are profitable for whatever reasons....

at any rate welcome to bg and have fun while trading....

Thanks nakachalet, just to be clear I have no connection with any vendors in fact totally the opposite, I spent way to much on them and have a personal hatred towards them..

I, like most I did learn my methods from some one but that someone was and still is a trader and not a vendor.. But as I am not here to promote anyone or thing I will leave it at that.

You reminded me of my old trading buddy Chuck. He used weird stuff, based completely on his observations of their characteristics in the market. We called him Jujuman. He used 3 tick stops, and most of his trades were over 30 ticks! I will be very interested in anything you have to say about the markets.

do you have any idea of how or if we can use square scaling on ninjatrader charts? Another plaform has that for gann and geometric applications. Love to make that work on nt. DB

I am not aware of any software that does Gann properly except W59

ES I didnt trade ES today but there were a couple of nice trades based on the 4th bar pivot described yesterday

There was a nice short below the low 1204 (7x 172) to 1197 (7x171) note how the acceleration was on bar 7 with the second vertical line

the next three bar sevens had acceleration and of course the short term top was made a bit higher than the next seven level of 1211 (7x173) On the way up a trade was indicated above the 4th bar pivot at 1206 which gave another 5 or so points.

The 4th bar pivot area became support during lunch and there was another nice trade going long around 14.00 which topped out at 1218 (7 x 174)

There were some 27 points available in these three trades

Now why I didnt trade the ES

As I indicated yesterday I was looking at some help in trading the European session

I watches Perrys video at the weekend and say thank you thank you thank you for sharing

I havent worked out how to import files yet so the setting are a one minute chart with a 5 and a 20 ema
and a 14 DM

I went into Roger Feltons room last week and saw that trades were being made on Gold, Euro and Crude Oil

So I set up those three charts during the European trading session

The first three Euro trades were I think textbook Perry on a one minute chart

and I have got to say after trading a four minute chart for some years a one minute chart is very fast!

I then took a scary Crude Oil trade and wimped out with a small profit although the move was good I bought at 85.86
and wimped out at 85.92 but the trade continued to 86.17

I then traded an even scarier Gold and made $592

So having made a net $955 in a couple of hours I went to bed

I havent posted this to brag but to tell the sim traders out there that these sorts of trade can be done live with cash
and of course to thank Perry once again as these trades would not have been done with out his video

Hello everyone.

I am very familiar with investments, but am brand new to day trading. A business associate introduced me to day trading some months ago, and the more I have learned about the process, the more interested I have become. Read a couple of books, know just enough to be dangerous. I have very little experience in day trading, but I have picked up a few things.

I think this forum is a good place to get some feedback and to learn more about if day trading is for me. Its a lot harder than it looks...its not a money printing machine. It takes much hard work and discipline and really knowing oneself.

These concepts about trading I never gave much thought to, and like most of the investment public, I used to think you bought what you beleived were good "quality" investments and held them forever....Buy and Hold, Buy and Hold... I no longer think that.

So thank you Big Mike. I hope I can gain much needed experience from you forum.

VinceVirgil

Mike,

I came looking for info on an indicator, but was struck by the first line of your tagline:

Quoting
Stop changing things. No new indicators. No new charts. No new methods. Be consistent with what is in front of you first.

Great advice!

Regards.

Hi everyone!

I've been interested in trading for a few years now and have loved the posts by the BigMikes community.

I'm always watching the markets and trying to learn more as I have only Sim trading experience.

Things I'd like to learn, tape reading and market profile reading.

Thanks to Big Mike for putting together a great place for traders.

Hello all
My name is Nevi and I live in Arizona.
Iím new to the forum here but not so new to trading, Iíve been interested in trading since the mid 90ís and although I have traded a little in that time my main goal has been to develop a fully automated trading system using tradestation, my latest attempts have been using stochastics on the 1 minute emini s&p500. Iím getting close but there are still drawdown periods I canít see myself trading through.

Hi my name is Mark, I'm a super new trader and very green when it comes to the psychology of trading. I really hope i can contribute to the community in someway in the future but I'll be here to listen and ask questions for a while. I'm a thrill seeker, musician, bartender, philosophy and math major (at least i was), I'm hoping i can be a jack of all trades. I'm here to learn.

Recently I decided to give the equities market a break until the melt-down is complete Currently trading futures - mainly EUR/USD, CL and GC. I enjoy this style of trading and am very keen to expand my knowledge base. I look forward to making contact with fellow traders.

I started with 6E then recently got attracted to CL. I'm a member of a group called Traders International and to date have used their signal sets. Their approach is conservative (a good safe thing for sure) but I think there are more entries to be had so now I'm searching around for additional means/alternatives. I hadn't heard of Mark Fisher; the only Fisher I knew of was Robert Fisher, the Fibonacci trader.

Here is a link which describes Mark Fisher system. Mark Fisher book is "The logical Trader". When i heard that Mark Fisher firm clears 33 % of daily crude futures volume and per Paul Tudor Jones " He is the best pit trader ever", that was enough for me. To top it off he has been trading since he was 16 and has an MBA from Wharton with distinction.

Hi everyone!

Joined up about a week or so ago, but then we lost power for 4 days due to the hurricane. Now, I'm finally back online.

I'm in my early 50s. I was in high school when the first articles on fractals and chaos theory came out in Scientific American, and the idea of applying the concepts to the stock market took hold there. I did some work developing signal based and FFT based models right out of college. Made a bunch of money, lost even more, and then I put it to the side as I got married and had kids.

I've done some pattern trading over the past few years, basically using it to time moving our retirement accounts in and out of the market. I left the company I was with a little while ago and got a pretty good severance package, so it has given me the opportunity to look at trading again.

I got NT and have been doing some sim trading, refining some polynomial regression models I've been working with. Getting ready to do some live trading. I look forward to learning a lot here, and adding my two-cents as well.

Like Big Mike I have traded in all kinds of markets and initially lost money. Years later I am a futures trader and develop futures trading systems. I still have a day job as I am not quite ready to become a trader full time, but that goal is not far off. My day job is as a Computer Engineer. I have a BSEE and work on government classified programs.

My favorite platform is NinjaTrader where I can code in a real language, as opposed to TradeStation and others. Of course I have coded for these other platforms as well, it is just not worth my time anymore.

As for my approach to trading, I am analytic and base decisions on statistics and probabilities. Even within my disciplined approach I bring a creative bent to what I do and never rely exclusively on traditional indicators. Like many people here I have read all the gurus and taken part in hundreds of "webinars." At this point I think I have been exposed to almost every approach out there!

I also have been in multiple hedge funds and worked with futures brokers. They all lost my money! That is when I started to develop my own systems and I discovered several important things. First, I had to understand all characteristics of the system. Second, I needed to not have a pushy sales person telling me what to do. Third, preservation of capital is easy to say, but hard to achieve. I now work to achieve all these things with my own systems.

When you say you are using Mark Fisher's system, do you mean his ACD method or otherwise?

I am only aware of Mark Fisher ACD system. ACD system is the base and then on top of it are refinements as proposed by MF in his book and some of my own.

I must admit when I found out that I could read a chart better than my broker it set off a lot of bells and whistles. Being a Building Inspector, I have to be able to communicate on many different levels in order to get my information across. I often see a lot of information out there but I become very cautious at absorbing a rainbow of approaches. I would want to be able to do a few strategies very well than several just ok. I think this is part of the education you get in life and in trading. Working full time, swing trading seems to bring the most comfort. Separating the the good , the bad, & the ugly information out there is a full time job.

Hi y'all,

My story is nothing unique, fell in love with trading over ten years ago, and off and on blew up multiple accounts not realizing what was required for success in the market environment. I've been working full time for the last two years and just now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. i guess what has seperarted me from the pack is that I made a decision to never give up the dream of successful trading, its the life and lifestyle I want. My markets in order of preference are: stock index futures, forex futures, commodities, options, and equities.

Hello everyone,

I've been trading part-time for 12 years (mostly commodities). I'm a full-time geologist working for Haliburton in the fracking industry located in the Dakotas. I'm 63 and hope to retire in a few years and trade full-time. I look forward to learning and contributing to this group. I hope I can be an asset and helpful as time goes by. For now I will concentrate on learning and exploring the site. I wish you all success!

Let's just say I've been around for a while. But I am chalking myself here as a novice, since I always have a lot to learn.
I'm a floor veteran, used to trade Euro options (that's the 3 month instrument), among many others. Now I trade forex,
I am also a techie.

Cheers,
CK

Hello everyone,

I'm glad to have found futures.io (formerly BMT). Before this introduction I've read some quality threads and watched a few webinars here on futures.io (formerly BMT).

I'm a discretionary trader be default; I took a CS course over 10 years ago, and was never really good at it so I suck at programming to say the least.

I'm learning quite a bit and will try to contribute as much as I can.

Happy Trading!

I was researching trading websites today and came across this site. I normally don't register on many sites for a number of reasons, and I have to say this is probably the first time I have ever posted on any site. After reading several threads and surfing around I just had a good feeling about it. My impression about the various points of views, the sharing of ideas, willingness to help others....are great points. Hopefully, one day I can be in the place to be able to share some seasoned trading wisdom and return a little.

Myself, I'm from the USA but have lived and worked here in Germany for the last few years. I work in the IT Security industry. I used to trade the big SP500 contracts years ago, but after I lost more that I made and I got out of it. I have been trading stocks for the last year and ready to switch the futures market. Looking forward to getting involved....

Hi everyone,
I started trading about 2 years ago. lost about 2k after going live in the ES futures market then rethought everything. Picked up trading pure price action and bars!!! Helped a ton. Now I use something called zones to trade with the price action bars. It's made a world of differences. I feel like I have learned a lot but the more I learn the more there is to know. I don't know that I will ever master the markets even though now I'm making seeing a lot of green! I'm interested in knowing more about trading psychology and trade management.
May the trend be your friend.

Hi fellow futures.io (formerly BMT) members! This is my first year in trading futures. I have traded equities with mixed results for past four years. Despite not being new to technical trading, I had a rude awakening trading futures. Major heartaches, blown accounts, visiting and paying for every trading room out there like a troll and a roller coaster of 8 months, I've started to feel confident about finding a style and methodology that will suit me.

This site is in a league of its own and I'd been a student of it for some time. Don't think I can contribute anything yet, so for now, I'll be a sponge, soaking in as much knowledge as I can from futures.io (formerly BMT).

Cheers.

Hello fellow traders,

Glad to have this forum. Been trading for a year and have, of course, made all the classic mistakes new traders make. But, I enjoy trading and keep coming back for more. Call me a glutton for punishment. I work during the day, so I trend-follow grains. When I leave the Army I plan to incorporate scalping the ES into my trading plan as I will need to trade for a living.

Any advice and mentorship is desperately welcomed. Again, very glad to be here.

welcome to bg

you'll have practically everything you need to learn how to trade here at bg

just allocate about a week in reading what interests you, then get on with what you gather from your reading about the directions you wish to take, ok?

crystalize your idea into operational terms and display it here for more experienced traders to offer other pointers to solidify your trading plan, if you wish to be done that way.

or as you mention you can find a mentor. but at this early stage, search, seek and research what you need and what interest you here at bg.... without having to pay any extra to any one which might or might not be able to lead you to trade profitably....

just a thought for you to ponder, if you want to....

welcome and happy learning....

when what you expected did not materialize once, twice or thrice.... in succession, perhaps it is time to stop trading live for a time.... ok? no one, absolutely no one, will laugh at us for stop trading for a time.... to regroup, rethink and reexamine what went wrong. as a matter of fact, it is most prudent for every trader to do so, when calls are going the other way in succession.

sim trade for a few days and reexamine your trading plans, your setup and your execution et al....

and do not, if i were you, attempt to resume live unless you can show yourself that you are profitable in sim.... ok?

sometimes, it is not your setup at all.... it is just the market independent movement.... for that particular day or days that caused you to lose trades.... just have to suck it up.... and keep on trading and NEVER without stops, pls.

particularly, when you know that your call is on the wrong side, get out immediately to preserve your livelihood--NEVER WAIT OUT TO PROVE YOU ARE RIGHT AND THE MARKET IS WRONG....!

cheers, blammo....

Ah-ba-ga-ba wudi

haven't you heard the news about woodies' goodies?

well, you need to search around very quickly and find out for yourself, ok?

i guess you already submitted the 99 usd donation to watch woodie using others' proprietary intellectual properties in his trading room without giving proper credit to the owners; worse yet, he has been claiming those as his own.... well, the 99 most probably is nonrefundable too, right?

any way, more importantly, welcome to bg, there are plenty of indicators around for you to play with, and to your heart's content....

again, welcome wudi.... (is that your chinese name?)

Thanks for the warm welcome.
After 16 years of investment bank job, I am in the process of fundamentally changing my live and go private trader. No back door. Had highly volatile times in over the years. From holding stocks for years to scalping futures. Striving to "smoothen" performance and income. Less leverage, more patience. Reading some of the posts with great interest. Hopefully can contribute from time to time when I am live.

Hi. I just started looking into trading. A friend helped me get started and gave me some reading material to go over. I haven't made any actual trades yet, but while experimenting with the demo I've seen how easy it is to make money, and also how easy it is to lose money. I have a lot to learn about this and I've been told that this site has a lot of great information.

hi all from Athens, Greece
i trade many years, the last two solely and professionally
i believe e-trading is the next-generation self-managing job
but this one needs tons of psychic guts, believe me!
Big Mike your forum is fantastic, if something the trading community needs desperately is this exchange of views, many congratulations just for the idea of a space to share our views, our mistakes, our evaluations and generally our passion for trading
i wish i have found your forum earlier!
i will be around for sure!

do not let anyone mislead you, friend.

trading is not easy at all. but it is much easier to be a broker, or a broker associate.

are your friend a broker or a broker associate at all?

have fun, there are many here who would be happy to help, just ask.

most importantly, just go ahead with sim mode, UNTIL YOU CAN PROVE TO YOURSELF THAT YOU CAN DO IT WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED TO TRADE YOUR SETUP.

have fun learning.

welcome 325trader

do you speak with tongue in cheek, when you said--

....but this one needs tons of psychic guts, believe me!....?

and most here can also guarantee that successful traders on board here....

DO NOT TRADE ON PSYCHIC GUTS, or WHATEVER THAT IS NOT ON OUR SCREEN....

most trade only on our personally worked out trading plan which differs from a trader to another trader.

and you would need to work out your own trading plan. you need to anyway, before even going on with sim mode, ok?

cheers and have fun.

I didn't mean to imply that trading was easy, but more referring to how fast things move. Sometimes I might make a trade and think "Wow. I just made $100 in 3 minutes." and other times I may think "Whoa, I just lost $250 in 30 seconds.". I definitely have a lot more to learn about reading the signs and placing stops, and I'll be sticking to the sim until I have a better understanding of everything.

Big Mike View Post
Hi everyone!

Like most day traders, I blew up my account a couple times and lost enough money to make most grown men weep. After I regrouped I started trading with common sense and with control of my emotions.

Later, I decided I wanted a forum to share my ideas as well as learn from others. I created my blog on April 17th, 2009 in order to meet this goal, as well as hold myself accountable for my trades and actions. I wanted a way to be able to lookback and ensure I was following my own advice.

The blog introduced me to a lot of fellow traders, some struggling, some doing exceptionally well. Talking with them everyday has really helped my trading and given me a lot of new ideas as well. In turn, I hope that I have provided them something useful that helps in their trading.

Since the blog did very well I decided to create this forum, and it was born June 11th, 2009. The forum was designed with the specific goal of having a small community of traders focused on making money. There are other sites out there but I never really felt at home with many of them, their userbase is too focused on proving someone wrong instead of trying to help.

You can find some more information about me in my profile.

Tip

After you read this thread and reply with your own introduction, you can find more Beginner articles on how to use this forum here:

Good hunting!

@nakachalet, lets please keep this thread just for introductions. You can send private messages if there are specific things you want to know from someone. No need to post a reply every time someone writes a message, it gets way too cluttered in this thread for that.

My name is Hezi and I have been playing with stocks for 10 years. Got some ups, got some downs as well.

About a year ago I have decided to stop playing around and take things more seriously. I know how to program, so I developed a Matlab program that scans 3000 stocks, backtests, and give me daily reports of interesting stocks.

The program is working, but it was too hard to maintain. At least alone.

I am currently using IB and started to look into ninjatrader programming to get more support and maybe faster implementation time.

Would love to connect with anyone to share trading strategies.

Happy trading!

Hezi

Hi Mike, everyone.

Like many I have dabbled in the markets before, not commodity or currency however.
I like the dynamism and fast open nature of the marketplace and instruments available now, compared to a few years ago.

This time I would like to be better prepared and educated, which includes learning and sharing experiences with fellow traders.

I am going to try to concentrate on one market at a time so i can better understand market dynamics driving the instruments Iím trading.

For the past few weeks i have been trading gold exclusively, talk about action!
My goal: become a more patient, disciplined trader.

I started my journey in trading last year about this time. Still struggling to find a trading strategy that will provide regular money. Love the ninja trader resources that are here, can't wait to start using some of them to help out in my trading success. Also looking forward to the chat room. Being alone is a bummer. Stumbled on this site while looking for a ninja trader indicator and am excited to see where this journey will lead to.

After weeks of lurking and learning a LOT here a brief intro.

I always had an interest in investing. Pre internet there was the
news paper and meeting your broker or banker. No HFT then.

1998 I began to get involved in online trading, caught the
crazy dot com bubble and got out way too early. A good
thing in hindsight.
Fear was stronger than greed, I was afraid that this "irrational
exuberance" was not sustainable. Got lucky... and learned to
respect fear if understood as a survival signal and not a hysterical
emotion.

Got lucky once more by buying gold a long time ago. Again
I sold way too early and have very little left. Funny though, even
on gold down days it feels good to have some... (I am NOT
a gold bug)

For the last 2 1/2 years I am experimenting with trading concepts
that fit my personality and life style. Stocks, forex futures options,
the choice is enormous, the "we make you rich fast" services
are endless.
I came to the conclusion that less is more, focus is good and
diversification is overrated.
2 to 4 trading instruments are more than sufficient. If I can
make relative consistent profits with 2 e mini contracts why
add other instruments and not increase the number of e mini
contracts.
Holy Grail? No, haven't found it. Never planned on finding it.
However BigMike and his fantastic board will continue enlighten
me on my quest to improve my trading every day. Learning
never stops and this board offers a plethora of smart minds.

Thanks for reading

Hey traders, Mike,
What a great idea. I've only been trading for about a year. Up a little on my accounts. Currently trade most of the commodities, (even canola!!!), but for short to medium term positions. I also day trade, mostly using support resistance, and market profile trades. I've tried the trend trades on a day time frame and haven't been very consistently successful. I would like to build my daytrading success, and look forward to some of you traders advice. I've spent many thousands for those courses and programs and indicators. I've learned that the best indicator (if you learn to trust it) is between your ears. And the best education is the market.

I am a complete novice when it comes to active trading. I have done some stock and option trading in the past but that was I ever did. I have read a lot about day trading and have visited the EOTPro trading room and attended a few webinars but my main interest is in price action.

It took me so long to introduce myself because that is my personality. I want to watch and see before jumping into anything so bear with me guys. Three days ago I introduced myself but I believe that went into the visitor section that is why it has not shown up here.

I was just surfing the web looking for a trading forum but I was quite impressed by this site because at first sight it looked professional and different from the few that I visited so that is why I kept coming. I hope I have found myself a home. Thanks folks.
