I am a software engineer by trade... also a pilot and a musician.
I have been trading on and off for 25 years. For the past 3+ years I have focused intensively on writing automated systems (C# in NinjaTrader). I am in it as much for the intellectual challenge as the profit potential... I want to understand why things work the way they do. Unfortunately this has been quite difficult as the markets are often inscrutable.
I cannot claim any wild successes, but I have also kept my losses low.
Though this has been a frustrating journey, I don't know if I will ever stop trading. My job requires me to be at the computer anyway, so why not?
Relatively new to futures with a strong background in software engineering. Have started dabbling with Sierra Chart and learning order flow and auction market theory. Excited to learn more.
I'm Tom, a long time investor and trader in stocks and ETFs and I am learning about futures. I use Thinkorswim and program studies and strategies in Thinkscript. I have used Tradestation and easy Language -- which is superior for back testing -- but prefer Thinkorswim for trading.
I found this site while searching for information on developing studies that employ fractal geometry, which I learned about in Mandelbrot's (Mis)Behavior of Markets -- Every trader should read that book at least twice!
Any suggestions on learning about futures trading would be appreciated. I love the liquidity and free leverage, but the latter must be greatly respected to avoid ruin. I need help on how to risk manage (and psychologically manage) the $1,000 minute by minute swings in one contract of ES, for instance.
haha really similar trading path! started in crypto, moved to stocks and now futures where Im doing so so. mainly hated how hard it was to keep proper tax records in crypto but looking back, really glad I switched.

Thanks for the welcome message and hello all. I am a beginner to intermediate trader (more close to beginner). Have had some "training". Am trying to focus on supply/demand and momentum trading processes and really need to learn more about how, when and why to use indicators and what they really mean in relationship to each other. I have so much to learn. Normally I trade alone without any input from anyone and I realize that this is a rather dangerous way to exist so I would welcome any input and advanced insight and knowledge from you advanced traders out there. My only trading partners are two rescued cats (who have actually taken trades without my knowing it, both of which made money. Even so, it taught me to take steps to prevent that from happening!. Sometimes even the simplest lessons have to be learned the hard way. I'm seeking a robust, healthy community of like-minded traders. Hope to hear from you all.
