I agree with BigMike. I've been a *nix server admin for years, but some issue with Ubuntu/Linux desktops or an application always makes me go back to using Windows.

Though I'm not trading live right now, I will probably always use a native (no virtualization) Windows 7 or Server 2008 environment for live trading. I've always hated XP and Server 2003 so I'm very glad the latest versions are much better.

Now for development I can see a great benefit of separating environments using virtualization. For example, only browsing in a "clean install" Mac OS X environment while using Parallels virtualization to develop in separate Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux installations. For example, maybe a beta version of an app is released, I can try it out without risking problems to my "production" development environment.

Hi,

Started thinking about creating a linux cluster, running vmware in it and then NT. Lots of layers but, that way one possibly could get NT in a cluster for analysis and backtesting.

Might give it a try at some point. Or anyone tried it already?

Running NT under VMWare works fine, I've done it for years. But if you mean a real compute cluster, where CPU calculations are being spread across multiple physical machines and you are running a single instance of an application --- good luck

Mike

Hmm... yeah, thats right, NT is a single thread and process so wouldnt get it distributed in a cluster like I have been doing with other applications in an OpenSSI cluster.
