If you use a virtual machine (VirtualBox, Xen, Vmware, ...), it's easy, without (Wine), it's difficult and/or impossible.

No -- with Wine it is virtually impossible. With virtual machine emulation (VirtualBox, VMWare, KVM) it is easy.

Does running it under a virtual machine emulation offer enough advantages to justify doing so? Or is this more of an option for someone who just does not want to run under Microsoft?

I'm a real technical guy. And I like Linux and Ubuntu in particular. I don't really like Microsoft, but not many do. That said, Windows 7 is really a great OS. I've wanted to switch to a Linux desktop for years, but there is always something that holds me back --- the current issue is my top two monitors are inverted (upside down) to minimize the bezel between monitors, and the nvidia drivers under Ubuntu won't let me rotate them! That kinda crap happens in Linux that would never happen in Windows.

The point is, I am still running Windows 7 even today. I keep hoping with each new release of Ubuntu they will get closer so I can switch everything, but just not there yet. That said, running VirtualBox under Ubuntu is more or less seamless. You can run W7 in VirtualBox under Ubuntu, and for instance just have your MultiCharts "window" appear on top of your Ubuntu desktop. It's all seamless, it would appear more or less as a native app. You need a fast machine and lots of memory...

But even then, I ran into problems with everyday tasks like running Camtasia to capture my trades and video, etc... those kind of apps don't exist for Linux (not any good ones anyway) and running them under emulation sucks.

So here I am. With Windows 7.

Mike

Yes, both for me.

I use Mac and run NT on VM Windows on my Mac. I use Linux too (Gentoo and Foresight Linux flavors). NT, SierraCharts, and now MultiCharts, are the only Windows app I run and use; all other apps I use are Mac apps.

I have tried portrait on LinuxMint and failed. So I am going to try landscape with this hexa output GPU.

Using Vmware Workstation and run a Windows 7 landscape over 3x 24"

Like an Eyefinity 3 setup on Workstation 7.13

Vmware workstation on Linux is a lot faster than Wmware workstation on Windows 7.

Hi,

Started thinking about creating a linux cluster, running vmware in it and then NT. Lots of layers but, that way one possibly could get NT in a cluster for analysis and backtesting.

Might give it a try at some point. Or anyone tried it already?
