I have Dell WFP3007, which are great, but have been replaced with different models. They put off a great deal of heat, and you can physically feel the heat gradient as you get close to the monitors.
Moving forward, I would prefer LED backlit displays with display port inputs, but I have not yet found any that are even kind of cost effective.
Heat is an issue for mine too, but not something that I think radically varies from one display to the other (unless perhaps it's an LED vs LCD). I am more concerned with getting 1920x1200 and an excellent crisp image.
I am surprised at the NV285/295 users here. No benefit to trading over a 9500GT unless you are using Matlab and CUDA.
I was surprised at how much more heat came off the 30 in displays vs the 24s that I replaced.
The reason I am interested in these new adapters, is I can drive up to four 30 in displays from a single half height passive card that only uses 20W. That is really nice if you are trying to build a compact quiet system.
Is the noise on your system a function of a stock CPU cooler or is it the CPU itself. I am looking at the 6 core but want to try and keep it as quiet as possible.
The CPU does not make any noise, but you have to cool the CPU and the system. Stock coolers are generally horrible as they tend to just focus on moving air quickly without regard to noise. The more power the CPU uses, the more cooling you use. It also has to do with the load on the CPU, for example, a fast CPU that is not being stressed is not that hot, but you have to plan your cooling based on worst case. Overclocking will make this worse.
At the end of the day, you have to decide what performance level you need/want, and then take steps to reduce the noise.
Thanks
are you the one using the 2460s with the AMD 6 core?
In my situation if I decide to go this route I would not overclock and would upgrade the CPU cooler to keep the nose level down.
No, but I would just spend some time googling reviews. There are lots of people that have built fast quiet computers, and they are good starting points or offer some good suggestions. Interestingly, a fast quiet computer does not have to cost an arm and leg either, but you have to invest some time in the process.
I had looked at buying 30" but when I looked at one traders setup, he actually had fans keeping the area, and the heat away from him, and he was always drinking water... (wonder why)
The 2460 cards in my opinion are nice, they dont require the cooling fan so they are quiet. No noise from those...
The other fan's in the computer are necessary to keep the CPU cool, but some of them are not necessary unless like others stated you are doing over-clocking.. Most gamers, etc. do over clocking, but this can sometimes cause instability, So you have to balance speed/performance with stability.
One idea would be to get LONG cables for your displays / keyboard / mouse, etc and move the PC into a CLOSET, or other areas, near your work area.
For instance my setup is near a closet, so I purchased longer cables and moved the PC into the CLOSET, and ran longer cables to my area, its not that far, and it keeps the area where I sit quiet. It worked fine, but I've moved it back to my desk area, as the noise doesn't bother me.
I have 4 of these, heat is not really an issue IMHO they are far enough from my face. Maybe that's why people ask me if I've been on holiday since I have a tan now :-)
