Any comments on AVG Ant-virus? It was included with my new PC, but I haven't installed yet.

Micro$hit has a free anti-virus/anti-everything package that runs smooth and doesn't interfere with communications software like other anti-virus.

https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?linkid=532428

This is a good anti-virus package as it still recognizes malicious code even after it has been obfuscated. I tested this against 25 other packages and it really outperforms. They have some great developers at Micro$hit.

Recently, I decided to ditch Windows completely and move over to Ubuntu 10.04. This linux platform is rock solid, naturally secure and extremely fast. It takes some getting used to, but I won't be returning to Windows anytime soon.

Something to think about.

I think Avast, Avira, & AVG are all fine for free anti-virus. Nod32 is the best if you want to pay for it every year. I personally don't think it's worth the extra $, I have it on my main desktop but all others including family and notebook I use AVG free version.

I use AVG Free and that's it, besides window's protection stuff. Works fine, no problems.

Honestly, if you keep your pc up to date with windows updates and don't download stupid stuff, then you should be all good.

and ccleaner is good to clean up stuff, like your registry and history stuff.

2. Security. I've long since abandoned AntiVirus and Antispyware solutions. The bog the system down, and the false positives can be as bad as malware. My Solution: First a program called Sandboxie. All my internet facing programs, namely browsers and and Outlook are run sandboxed. Sandboxie, allows me to specify what can run in the sandbox, what can access the internet, and also block off access to critical portions of the disk. This allows me the freedom to be able to open any attachments from clients, without worrying about harm to my systems. I additionally run Online Armor Firewall and HIPS(Host Intrustion Protection System). A Hips keeps programs that aren't authorized from running from doing so. Finally I run another HIPS Malware Defender as a backup. I have tested this setup, against some nasty malware, and it protects the system very well. Note I go well beyone this setup when I am playing with malware.

+1 ; this comment did not get the attention that it deserve so I'm highlighting it again.

One sandbox for NinjaTrader, one for TWS, one for Amibroker, one for OptionsOracle, one for uTorrent (hehe); Sandboxie container folders are on D:\ drive so just take backup of those folders and you are all set.

Machine runs basic Windows XP + MS Office + Java + .NET framework & utilities like Notapad++, WinRAR, PowerDVD etc on C:\ which is protected by GHOST & TrueImage. I refresh them every 2-3 months.

I only do online banking with a live linux cd on a computer with the hard drive disconected. Mint is a good distro. Comes with java and flash.

Unfortunately, even that way it isn't 100% secure. To achieve that you have to unplug the 'puter after disconnecting from the internet.

PS Sound like humor it is true. Think USB
