Funny, but I'm running a five year old I7-2600K box with 16 Gb RAM with a mess of charts open (both minute and tick based on a couple symbols, plus Market Analyzer with 20+ symbols (both futures and FX), and I simply never see a lag issue on NT8. Task manager shows CPU usage at 13% and RAM at 34%, and none of the 8 cores appears to be utilized more than 20%.
That said, NT8 and Excel are the only apps running on this machine.
I wish I could explain my good fortune, but can't (clean living, uh, no..). In any case there's another data point for your analysis.
My NT 8 Performance experience is similar to that of dwt51; I have 20 plus charts open with no detectable lag using DTN IQfeed or CQG, some other broker based feeds I have expereinced some lagging issues. I only run NT8 on this PC for charting and execution. All browsing and other apps are on a different machine.
I am perfectly happy with my refurbished Dell Optiplex 780.
Upgraded the $178.00 unit by swapping out the 1tb hard drive with a 256SSD.
Upgraded to a Ge Force GT710.
16GB of ram (added 8GB to original)

Using 1 34in monitor for general usage including one longer term chart
Using 43in 4K tv for 2 charts, ADV and DOM for trading.
4K TV is slightly clunky for certain drawing tools on some platforms. However, the cursor action is fast enough with NT8 using hot keys. I might upgrade one day to a regular large monitor, but this works just fine for scalping ie. 10 sec. to 2-3 minute trades.
Total dollars spent on desktop: $338.00 exc. tax (sales tax free state)

My system is about 10 years old now. Intel i7 2.8 GHz with 12 Gig RAM 2 screens. I have no problems. I think the speed and reliability of your internet is far more important.
I have dual Xeon processors running windows 10 and its really screaming. I have usualy about 5 charts open on dual monitors and have not had any problems whatsoever. My McAfee would cause my i5 to freeze up and that's why I switched. Really its not the speed of the execution but the stability of the platform in my opinion. Running NT8.
And as others have mentioned, I also have both my computer and my Internet router on APS backup. Also SSD made a huge difference, as did a graphics card.
BTW... if you look on CL you should find people selling these Xeons for cheap. The large companies generally recycle their servers and so these are high quality CPUs that have serviced 20 to 30 people running multiple applications including VR. These are server grade and extraordinarily stable. Picked mine up for $200 on CL.
EZ Trading Computers at https://eztradingcomputers.net is your best bet. The guy who runs the company is a full-time day trader and total computer geek. Seven years ago I bought a custom computer system from them. It has an overclocked Intel Core i7-3960X CPU 3.30 GHz 64-bit processor, seven monitors and 32 GB RAM. Six years ago I bought a 17” Asus Republic of Gamers laptop from them that has an Intel Core i7-4700HQ CPU 2.4 GHz 64-bit processor and 32 GB RAM. When I travel I take the laptop and a Toshiba 15” USB monitor with me. Both computers still work great. Recently I reformatted the disk drives and reloaded Windows 10 – that really improved processing. Another important factor for a trading system is Internet speed. My Internet download speed is over 100 Mbps. Good luck!
Build your own system. You get exactly what you want for less than half the price. I've built several - the first one I built about 8 years ago is still chugging right along, no problems.
I don't use my trading computer for anything except trading unless I have to import something to the platform. I use Ninja and Jigsaw (not for placing orders - only to monitor order flow). I have no problem with rithmic pro or tradeovate for the props I'm with as well as my own account.
If you have too much crap on your computer - i.e. using it for browsing the internet, email, ordering from Amazon, etc you're going to have problems eventually. Dedicate one computer to your system, clean it up every week (delete files, data you don't need) and use a good malware program - I use Malwarebytes.
You can get all your components here: https://www.tigerdirect.com/ Their support is very good. Building it is not hard - there's plenty of resources on the internet. You'll save a lot of money by building it yourself. Plus you'll be that much more knowledgeable about the guts of a computer and how it works.

Agree with this point - except maybe the Malware. If your not using the computer for email or surfing where would the malware come from. While it is often needed, I hate Malware, kills your CPU in so many cases.
It's a good point. I check upload/download speed regularly. I don't think Malwarebytes has much of an impact. I keep it on for the "just in case" scenario.
