We are almost 24 hours into the memtest, and it's still going on

It says " **Pass complete, no errors, press Esc to exit **" at the bottom, but it has said that I think since the test started.

Under testing it currently says 1528M of 4080M, so I'm assuming it's not even halfway done yet.

I'll have to check whether this sounds right or not, maybe it's just repeating the test over and over as under Pass it says "30" lol. I posted on the memtest forums to see whether this is right or not.

I wasn't able to find the boxes, looks like they are all gone except for the computer case box, which serves no purpose

Check the website of the hard drive manufacturer, they may have a bootable program that will run a hard drive diagnostic that you can download onto a usb drive.

Also, when the memtest is finished, check to see if you can boot to the command prompt.

Will do.

You can download one here for free: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8 If you downloaded a pirate copy, I would recommended getting the official Microsoft download. Remember, your trading platform should not be treated like a toy.

It will be safe to boot it from the USB. It won't start wiping out everything without your OK.

You need those things plus a keyboard and memory and something to boot from, it can be another hard drive, USB, CD, or DVD. Of course, a graphics device is needed if you want to see anything happen, otherwise you will only hear beeps. You can look up the beep codes to help see what they mean.

Your hard drive is making bad noises, a sign of imminent death. They are mechanical devices with limited lifetimes. All hard drives will fail eventually. Imagine never changing the oil in your car. There is nothing you can do to save it. You need a new hard drive.

Do not try to use it any more than necessary to back up your data. Don't run extensive diagnostics, except maybe a SMART test. Hook it up to your XP machine and copy anything important. (Not applications or things you can download later.)

That's what I felt like when I heard it to be honest. Those noises are very rare, but they didn't sound very comforting.

I'm going to hook up my XP hard drive to this machine and see if things run properly. The only things I am hoping to salvage from there are my tax returns, some wedding stuff, and a bunch of songs (~7,000)

Thanks so much for the help guys.

You can't just switch root drives like that unless the xp drive is originally from this machine. If the xp drive is from another computer, it is not configured properly to be the root drive on this one.

I would kill the memtest. Take the hard drive out, place it in a hard drive enclosure, hook it up as an external drive to another computer (or you can install it a secondary internal drive). If you can't access the drive in that manner, you know its the hard drive. If you can, still, copy all files that you want to back up. That way you are safe no matter what.

Then you can run some diagnostics on the drive from a computer that works. That will be the next step.

That makes sense, I won't do that then.

I don't have a hard drive enclosure on me so I'll have to wait until I can get one. I'll kill the test tomorrow when trading slows down and run some of the other diagnostics and see if any of them tell me anything new. I'm assuming I'm looking for a hard drive enclosure that will hook up to my hard drive and then give me a USB to plug into the other PC as if it was a normal USB, correct?

I know this is going to sound stupid...but maybe it will give you a clue to the problem.

If you have a valid license for the OS then make sure it is valid and written down.

Assuming you can read it and have it recorded, you will need to format and reinstall the OS.
If you don't have the valid license, then the problem will occur again.

In the past when an error like this has occurred, the issue is that Windows only allows a few hardware swaps before it stops working.
I think only two or three major hardware items can be changed without the OS hanging. (HD, Mainboard, Video Card)
MSFT is doing this to stop piracy.

One of the methods they are using is linking the Disk Signature to the OS.
If the Disk Signature does not match what the OS is expecting, it crashes.
(I'm not saying your's is pirated, mine was not and I had the error)

I think the Disk Signature thing is done via the update process on older OS and comes embeded in more recent OS.

To prove this, I have had a system working well and had been registered online and determined by MSFT to be valid.
I changed the Disk Signature and rebooted the machine. This error occurred. Even reinstalling the OS on the hard drive would not solve the issue for me and only restoring the original signature would allow the OS to be reinstalled and work properly.

If you want to verify this on your own I would suggest getting a new hard drive (a good excuse to upgrade to SSD) and install the valid OS on the new drive. If it works, you have solved the problem and a lot quicker than it was for me to discover what the problem was.

There may be other ways to do this but this is what worked for me.

Good Luck.

Yeah, you remove the hard drive, and essentially attached it to an enclosure that turns it into an external drive. The enclosure comes with a USB plug. If you don't have an enclosure and don't want to buy one, you can also just install the drive internally in your other computer.

You want to do this before you reformat and re-install the OS as per @DavidHP so you can get your data off.

Honestly I get closer and closer to formatting the hard drive, and if that doesn't work then just buying a new one. I had to key in my code to be able to download windows 7 from their site so that should tell me the key is still good, and will work on a new hard drive.

I'll see if I can get the info out of there first, and if not then oh well.

Cheers!

I might've already done this.

I didn't mention it but a couple of weeks ago I took out the hard drive and tried to put it into my XP machine. I got some error and I don't quite remember what it said. But I panicked as soon as I saw it and took it out as I didn't want to "contaminate" my other computer (not even sure if that's possible ). It probably had something to do with what you said about it not being part of the original machine.

Or are you suggesting connecting it to the XP machine as an additional hard drive? Like leaving the XP hard drive in there and hooking it up as if it was a SSD? That I didn't try and didn't know it was possible. I thought you could only have 1 hard drive and 1 SSD hooked up to a PC, that's the setup I have on my trading PC.

Either way, I'll try it out again and see what comes up, I'll be sure to take pictures this time.

Just realized I meant to say I am running Windows 7 on that PC, not sure if it makes a difference.

This could be a dumb question.

But let's say the memory test comes back fine, would that pretty much guarantee that the problem is the hard drive itself or hard drive related?

Here's my logic
  • Can't be PSU if it turns on
  • Can't be graphic card or else nothing would show
  • Can't be memory if test came back fine
  • Can't be the MOBO because does it do anything apart from put all the pieces together and communicate between them? It doesn't store information does it?

Because if it's pretty much guaranteed to be the hard drive then I am comfortable buying a new one and installing Windows 7 on it and then worrying about the data on my hard drive later. I just wouldn't want to buy a hard drive and then realize it was something else and then being stuck with a hard drive I don't need

I don't think you can rule everything out so quickly. For instance, it could be the motherboard. It could also just need a reformat and re-installation in which case you don't need a new hard drive.
