Waiting for my new desktop system to arrive, here's what I get with my six year old Lenovo x220 wireless: 103.58mb/s download, 163.65mb/s upload (can't post images yet). My work laptop has a faster card and can get over 200mb/s. Hopefully the new system beats that (and be screaming fast if I wire to the router).

I live in a rural part of West Texas. Internet connection has always been a problem for me. Over the last few years there have been 3-4 wireless providers available here but none have been able to provide uninterrupted service on a consistent basis. When they worked, download speeds usually ranged between 3-7Mbps. But I often experienced outages of several minutes to several days. For years I have gotten frequent direct mail solicitations from HughesNet advertising high speed connection over satellite. I finally fell for it. They offer convoluted service plans, but my plan is pretty typical. Every month I have 20gig of data at high speed, usually about 45Mbps. After that is used up I am supposed to have unlimited data at reduced speed. All of their promotional literature and their website states that out of plan "unlimited" d/l speeds are "typically 1-3Mbps". That's what their phone reps tell you, too. I NEVER even get 1Mbps. Typical speed tests usually show that I am getting less than 500Kbps. It usually takes me only 3-5 days to use up my plan allotment, so most of the time I am working with about 500Kbps. I also use a hotspot from Verizon. (another of the "unlimited data" scams) on a second computer. It's usually about 5Mbps until I get to the "unlimited" part, then about 350Kbps.

By contrast, I've been to Romania 6 times in the last 4 years. All my friends there get 80-100Mbps for a fraction of what I pay here

I almost bought a house in Romania a couple of years ago. I'd still like to live there.

At one stage in South Africa the internet speeds were so unreliable and expensive that someone sat down and number crunched some figures. His calculations showed that it was cheaper to get a weekend flight to Hong Kong (return), buy a hard drive and download 500GB of data from one of the internet cafes. It was faster too because the equivalent data download in South Africa was a 3 week affair
@Obelixtrader I might have drooled a bit when I read your post.

AT&T fiber to my house. This is my main internet. I have a small backup with Comcast in case it is needed.

This is on my laptop. I get better speeds on my desktop but it is down for repairs today.

Here are the speeds I get on my desktop.

Not too worried about the ping times. I am not doing anything that would remotely need super fast ping time. It's not noticeable to me.
