Prior to moving to Ecuador, I had 75 Mbps and was paying $75 a month. It was a dedicated line. I am only talking about my home, not including any servers or etc.

Now that I've moved to Ecuador, I currently have 4 Mbps and am paying $480 a month. It's a dedicated fiber line. I will increase that to around 6 Mbps once my container arrives with all my stuff, so I can at least stream 1080p HD movies and stuff. That will bump me to over $700 a month.

Here in Ecuador the "norm" is a shared line, you can get "5 Mbps" shared for about $30 a month, but the problem is I've tried numerous providers and they all have huge packet loss and are shared out about 20:1 (meaning 20 customers sharing one line), so actual speed is atrocious, and hence why I was forced to go with the dedicated fiber line.

I've researched other options such as microwave, they aren't less expensive.

The good news is, there is a massive fiber expansion underway in Ecuador, and probably within 5 years I can get back to where I was in the States (speed/price) or close.

Hello Mike

That's a lot of $$$ money for connectivity.

Is it an option to bundle, several lines together into a VPN (there are devices to do that,
it will also allow some fault-tolerance, if one carrier goes down), make a pipe to the US and
go to the internet there ?

you would have a device in equador, connected to several lower-cost lines,
a similar device in a datacenter in USA, that assembles all the packets together and goes through a
big pipe to internet. Effectively cumulating the bandwidths of the seperate cariers, between equador
and usa

just a thought...

I'm spoiled also... pretty good bandwith in europe :

No, I brought all kinds of networking equipment with me that does load balancing and fail over, and even built my own router off several linux distros to try to make it work. Nothing can make a bad line good.

The good news is, with the money I am spending I do have an SLA and have experienced only a few minutes downtime so far, which they actually called me to notify of me (I wasn't home). So hopefully it's minimal.

it appears just like the room is light when I flip the switch...but I have no idea if that is good or not.

No idea if it is shared, don't even know what that means but it is Comcast and comes in a bundle with television and home phone. I think all in it is $199 a month for the three. Dan

This is fantastic. I pay the same for a comcast business internet service (just internet) and I never get more than 55-60 Mbps down and 11-12 up.

I have the same issue like wldman, dont know what shared means.

I have cable connection for 3 digital tv boxes, phone (1000min. free for MX, USA, CAN; 200min. cell phone national, free local calls) and a 10 Mbps internet connection for $ 60 a month.

Right now we have some internet problems because the cable company is changing in the city all cable to fiber, they will finish it in 2 months.

I don't think shared exists in the States. See my prior post for detailed example of shared.
