Or, do I want ECC? maybe I do... That is why you could crash running 24/7, right?

Probably not for a desktop computer. There are two attributes of servers that differ from a desktop:

1. Servers tend to be set up in dense environments, e.g. a single server that has 16 sticks of memory; or a cluster consisting of 16 servers that have 256 sticks of memory together. Depending on the architecture, just 1 server going down in a cluster can have unwanted consequences, so your risk in a setup like this is about 64x that of a desktop setup.

2. Servers tend to set up in unreachable environments. If a server crashes, restarting it can be time-consuming and have costly consequences. A typical PC with an SSD boot drive just reboots in under a minute.

That makes it easy. I like easy.

Here is my final build, will run monitor #4 using a USB to DVI that I already use on the Sony.

memory is 8MB (2x4MB) at 1600mhz, CAS 11

If I want to add 6 more monitors the card is $239 and only requires 55w. have the PSU headroom to add two of them. Done.

Asus Qualified Vendors List memory - Asus - Graphics & Displays

new update on memory. I did not order it with the rest of the build because I had not really gotten that deep into it. The Viper Extreme may not be the direction I go. I also decided to start with 2 8GB sticks for easier upgrading.

Current considerations are to comply with the Asus QVL
https://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1150/H87M-E/H87_Series_Memory_QVL_list_Report.pdf
for the easiest warranty path, if needed.

I just thought I should keep this thread accurate, even though it started as a single question. Thanks again everyone who responded. I am getting excited now.

There isn't anything comparable. Only motherboards touted as workstation boards will offer this flexibility. They start at much higher price points.
Every motherboard manufacturer lists motherboard RAM specs, so you can easily confirm just by looking at a manufactures website

small and packable. I decided, rather than mess with the case, a $5 part is all it took for me to realize, I am building a new computer, and decided a new case is a lot of things. I went back to pcpartpicker, increased the zoom to where there were no prices, and just looked at what the cases did. I want small and easy to pack up and go, but also having a lot of years of upgrade options.

I am down to the Fractal Design minis, or this one that I just researched and found this. Not what I am building in terms of gadgets, but it has expandability in a tiny black box, good ventilation options, same price range as the Fractal Designs.
