If you do not opt for ECC memory then go for the i7 4470k, I think it can do anything between 4,2ghz-4,5ghz rock stable. It is a copy of the E3 with the ability to overclock. You can overclock it a little bit to get some more out of it.

I´am running a xeon X3360 overclocked from 2,8ghz to 3,4ghz rock stable (it can do 3,9ghz). You cannot overclock today´s xeon´s so just go for the i7.

I do not think I have any interest in overclocking. My 400 cpumark processor does just fine.

Hi GaryD, i think if you plan to add additional graphic adapters in the future, you may need the Z87 chipset to be able to use IGP and PCIe graphics simultaniously. With other chipsets it is either or.

Additionally a board like Asrock Z87 (Z87M) Extreme4 has the better network controller (Intel) and an outstanding soundquality with even a decent headphone AMP that can drive 500Ohm studio headphones. This is same as ASUS quality, gold caps and well sized coolers but greater value for the buck.

I would agree with @jsengxx2 on this. Shame to pay extra for a Xeon's ECC memory controller just to pair it with regular DIMMs. I would just get a K-series i5/i7 and overclock it.

My lone word might not be very valuable so you could take my suggestion with a pinch of salt, but I've dealt with both the i7-4770k and several models of the SB/IB/Haswell Xeons in 24/7 environments.

Nice to see someone with experience with both cpu´s

I always wondered if there is any difference regarding stability between the xeon and the i7?

Just for my future pc build

I love my xeon x3360, it is rock stable.

For overclocking you would also need a Z87 chipset as setting the unlocked multiplier of K CPUs is not (officially) supported with other haswell chipsets. If it has to be an mATX case, a better cooler than the stock one needs to fit in, otherwise it will be loud (Haswell chips run hotter and are not suited for greater overclocks like Ivy-Bridge anyway).

From the performance-need-economic standpoint, if cpu mark 400 is still sufficient, even the small brother of I3 (with less cache), G3420, would theoretically be 8.5 times faster according to cpu mark. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp=2028&cmp=1919&cmp=2015

Yet i also would prefer to trade from a machine that has higher reserves and 4 cores. But, are those several 100mhz/single digit percentage gains, you get additionally on current powerful processors with overclocking, really worth the tweaking and stability test hassles, if you trade manually ?

If you do co-located HFT, quote stuffing etc., superior to any overclocked I7s are FPGAs https://ra.ziti.uni-heidelberg.de/cms/images/pdfs/High-frequency-trading.pdf

I read that earlier, and stopped what I was doing. I had my carts loaded at Newegg, Tigerdirect, Amazon, and Microcenter. So I got away from it for the day.

I ran some searches and could not verify that either way.

What I have learned, is that as each piece of the puzzle changes, it often affects something else.

Is hybrid graphics support only available in the Z chipset?

To be honest, the i7's go onto desktops which get switched off/rebooted before any crash ever takes place, although on average we've kept them switched on for 5-6 months, 24/7. I've never experienced a crash due to the processor ever since the Sandy Bridge crop. Almost 99% of the crashes I experience now across my builds have been due to OS-level or memory issues. Just as you've suggested, I usually overclock them to a 42-46x clock multiplier (depends on the binning of the processors and luck with the integrated voltage regulator), which seems to be the sweet spot for cost-effectiveness and they are completely stable in this range.

If you do co-located HFT, quote stuffing etc.

Quote stuffing and colocated electronic trading are different ball games. In the important venues, you are recognized by your client ID and required to be more efficient as your volumes go up, so people who spam quotes are typically the inferior, low volume electronic traders. One can spam quotes with any kind of infrastructure, e.g. a retail account with Rithmic backend, but you will have much bigger fish to fry if you are faster than that.

excellent concept to take advantage of older form factor laptops where there is only one sata connection, used for an older HDD, or a newer mSata or SSD. This drive has the purpose of doing both jobs of an SSD & HDD but only mediocre and best left alone, according to word at the Center, where it is being heavily discussed.

hope that helps

Newegg business has 15% off E3 processors.
