Any comments are welcome. I am about to start buying parts. The only things I am attached to are

the Asus Z87 board (any)

Intel i series (went to i5 without hyperthreading)

and an SSD HD (may need bigger than 120, I know, still reading and learning and did not update the photo, but using 25.8GB currently through XP).

@GaryD

I just caught on to this thread..... hope you didn't put signature to check, or pin to debit yet.....

hope you didn't break the seal on the cpu or damage and assemble the parts, in case you already obtained them

https://www.microcenter.com/ -- Geek Heaven!

motherboard and cpu and ssd and video card bundles and specials...

just like Home Depot / Lowes are hardware heavens to the DIY's (for our foreign guests, DIY means Do It Yourself - in reference to fixing, repairing, building or improving one's home or other properties)

Micro Center - Computers, Electronics, Computer Parts, Networking, Gaming, Software, and more! is geek heaven, and especially so, when you see how many others of like ilk associate there. Ask them any tech question you could possibly want, and watch them bat the ball out of the park! (ok, again, for our foreign quests that is a reference to American Baseball, when the batter hits the ball and scores a home run)

Gary - check them out first, second and third, especially if there's a location near where you live....

Also, rethink that core i5 and choosethe core i7 for $249.99

Yeah, I really wish we had one here in Orlando. I had to get a USB to ethernet converter once while in Denver, and went into the only Microcenter I have been in, and it was incredible.

I had paid for motherboard and processor, neither have arrived and the mobo got canceled on me. The processor can be returned, and I think I am dialing it in to xeon. I am going with graphics cards.

I also bought a case that was on sale, had a rebate, and I had a coupon for $10 off. It cost $9.99 after everything. But it too is returnable, bought local.

@GaryD I didn't notice your response, have to tag me.

which merchant did you in like that?, come on, blast them, after all, its your experience, and perhaps it can alert others to good, bad or indifferent service..

ok, skip and forget the Xeon. Core i3/5/7 Gen4 Intel are way past superb! They are over 30% faster than the prior Gen3 processors!. Xeon are roughly Gen1 or Gen2 and are stale, although still fast. What counts are the envogue mobos available on the z87 chipset platform.

you can always order to ship from Microcenter....
and yes, they are awesome. There are at least 4 or 5 in my immediate area surrounding NYC, and let me tell you, you can't have just one...

when you go in there, just prepare to spend at least 1.5 hours and leave your whole paycheck there too. From the magazines, additional usb flash drives, printer, cable, blank media and hot deal specials, you will always need something (worth buying).

cheers

Newegg...... TigerDirect......

ughhh

I just reviewed my prior purchase history at both sites, and got highly disgusted that at the time, they were the only worthwhile vendors at the time.

bloated with excessively high prices and completely uncompetitive terms....

never again!

never!

and end up with something like this (minus the 750W PSU - changed to a platinum 660W which runs cooler and has passive mode (no fan) for ultimate silence): .... but WAY overkill

well, its only saving grace is dead silence, and its super robust. By transferring the heat from the mobo, CPU and GPU via water to radiators I'm prolonging reliability/lifespan
