I posted this at the Windows XP upgrade thread but received no replies. Thought I would try here. Recently I upgraded my operating system on my trading desktop from Windows XP to Windows 7. The problem I've noticed, there is no color difference on NT's lighter "System" colors. For example, the colors ControlLight, InactiveBorder, Scrollbar, MenuBar,etc., are all the same color which is RGB 212,208,200. I didn't experience this problem using Windows XP. I've attached screenshots of Windows 7 color management defaults that I'm currently using.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Rick

@trs3042 You might need to update drivers for your video card. I would go to manufactures website get latest drivers. There are times windows automatically uses a generic or older version of a driver that causes issues.

Tried updated drivers still didn't fix the problem.

Thank you for your input,

FYI - 2nd case number with Asus had me go back to default bios settings, change the memory speed from 1600 to 1333.

I am currently running 4 windows of Internet Explorer, each with a different 720p YouTube channel running, plus two installations of Sierra Chart with 6 charts per, plus this (futures.io (formerly BMT) post), plus Paint, plus have the Task Manager open. Using 5.77GB Ram.

The Windows I have to where they cross borders from one monitor to another in every direction. Looks and sounds insane (all sound coming out the speakers.)

The tech thinks the issue is Xeon at 1600MHz. I discovered the memory timings default was 9-9-9-24 while I was in that part of the Bios, changed to match installed memory at 11-11-11-28. Fingers crossed.

Gary, if there is no issue with the items RMA'd you don't get a replacement. Instead you'll be receiving the items back in the mail.

At this rate, you may soon be opening up your own "slightly used" computer parts store.

Could just initiate a stop loss as plan has failed. Not sure if plan incorporated all of these other scenarios, I'm guessing not. So cut losses, and move on to next trade, ie get a dedicated graphics card and combo of components known to work together. Why take this path? Because its not meant to be this hard, really its not. Should work out of the box so to speak. This changing of settings is all band aid stuff, and is sure to just turn to hassles in future.

@GaryD

I posted a select few pdf files earlier, which I found tremendously helpful in all these sub-component issues, each having their own universe and physical laws...

I talked with you earlier regarding going down mainstream with the Core i7 or i5 series cpus instead of the Xeon series, especially since so many reports are and have stated and proven that the new Gen 4 core i7's matched and exceeded the Xeon series.

Evidently there are compatibility and operational issues with that mobo and server cpu, and it really should not be, at least on paper.

sorry to hear that, I would say block out 2 hours and make, no make ASUS stay on the phone until you get an up and running stable platform. I had to do that previously with ASRock, and we finally RMA replaced that mobo because we were able to see it would not post in the order the tech said it should have.

perhaps that will clarify things....

It seems like I may have it worked out. Asus' bios had a lot of settings that did not match this system. I downloaded the xeon data sheet and went through each setting. It was also trying to manage power to the cpu and gpu, I set it manually to the recommended settings (higher than default for cpu and lower for gpu) The ram speed is back up to 1600.

I also read the section on multi monitors and found that 3 are supported, but only in certain configurations, and once I add a 4th monitor thru a video card, the IGP only supports 2 monitors. That could have caused a few problems. I am now running HDMI + VGA on the mobo, and DVI + VGA off a video card.

I did some searches and found several other builds using the H87 w xeon, read thru some of those comments. I could not find similar issues.

After all the bios tweaks and monitor connection changes, I ran the Passmark Performance test again, and this time it scored 10% higher Passmark rating than previously. It has been several hours with no crash. Leaving several things running overnight again.
