Gary, this is in no way meant to be condescending...

Not even close. For me, the shying away from overclocking is mostly because I do not know enough to want to mess with it. That may mean I give up some processing potential, and that I could have gotten more out of my investment.

Similar to you saying you are a few generations behind, my poor old pentium 4 has put in a good fight with it's lonely little core. I could buy the slowest i3 and feel like I had the fastest machine in the world.

For now, I am not interested in anything more than what it will do out of the box. If that changes, my build is so inexpensive I will have little to no remorse to simply start over and sell the first build. As of today, it looks like I will be in under $700, and possibly as low as $550. if I can't get that back out of it, or at least HALF of that, I did not do my homework properly.

I will still have a machine that, to me, is a Lamborghini. Meanwhile, what I am really building is a Honda Accord, 4 door sedan.

If I were building something to trade while watching movies, skyping, checking email on the same machine, it might be a completely different approach. But I maintain a 2nd computer for redundancy, and that one is where I watch movies, surf, etc. Right now my cpu mark on that laptop is around 1600 something, and it does ok. But I have a recently purchased HP Elitebook sitting on my desk, just waiting for me to turn it on, and it has 2x the ram of what I use now.

Also, if I thought I would ever have a 12 monitor+ setup, I would be thinking differently too. But I really doubt I will. Too much to look at, for me. I set a goal of starting in December and being ready to build by April, and I am on track. More than anything, I know what is right for me, where when I started I had no clue about any of it. What processor, what ram, what hard drive, what operating system, how much power, how do I hook up displays... today I know what I want within a few choices. And since my sony mule keeps getting up every day, I am not pushed to do anything right now. The spare tire Elitebook will run 3 displays and could be hooked up ready to trade in less than 5 minutes, the way I have set up my access to everything.

Overclock on without me. It looks like a lot of fun.

In my opinion if you do not go with ECC memory then jut go for the K serie, this will give you some room in the future to tune it and to keep it competing with newer generation systems.
(Your computer will be idling most of the time so speed is not important for trading, a fast and stable internet connection indeed is very important. Do not believe in all that stories about traders needing the fastest computers that is just for marketing so they wan´t you to believe that you have to buy (from them) a computer every year.)

With regards to the graphics cards, I think that you can save some bucks on that too. Just buy a board that has 3 pcie slots so you can ad 3 graphics cards too it. I think that traders need in average about 4 too 6 screens (less is better!) any thing else is just distraction, the human brain cannot digest all that information.
The cheapo cards that are perfect for trading are the geforce 210 and the hd 5450 all passive cooled and here in Europe they cost about 30 Euro that is about 40 bucks. And if you compare the performance of this cards with that of an amd firepro 2460 then I think the best bet is: just take 2 cheapo graphics cards.

I run 2 hd 4350 cards that are now 7 years old and still very good.
Just look at my passmark scores:
PassMark Software - Display Baseline ID# 214357

So if I had to make the same decision as you, I had too chooses:

1. Building a rock stable Xeon based system with ECC memory

OR

2. Building a ´´K´´ version with the benefit of overclocking.

So no just pick your choose, it is up too you

Just keep in mind, going for a Xeon without ECC memory is the same as building a ´´K´´ version!

Here is a budget build that will rock 3 monitors, with room to add one video card for 6 more. If I thought I would possibly want more monitors, I would need to go full ATX and a larger case (this case is tiny), and this is a step down in processor than what I will most likely get, but with Newegg Busines having a 15% off sale on xeons (that is not reflected in this price list) , this would be an incredible trade computer for the money.

Same build but with a 6 output mini DP card, still has plenty of PSU headroom, and now drives 9 monitors, I think.

Subtract the $30 on the 1225 V3, and add an OS, and you are in for under $1k

Current sale squeezes more value out of the xeon, as long as I do not care about overclocking.

That is a great score for a 7 year old machine. Mine is only 2 years older, and I got a cpu mark of 400 something. And at the time, what I bought was the most expensive computer at... Computer City

OK, everything is ordered except for the HD and RAM. This thread was a great part of the process.

Does anyone have experience with Patriot Viper Extreme? There is a rebate that makes it 30% less than the Corsair Vengeance or G Skill Ares. And, they look cool.

Or, do I want ECC? maybe I do... That is why you could crash running 24/7, right?
