Understandable, but sometimes may be necessary if one must travel. I often visit family, sometimes for a week or more, where I have a room, desk, screen, etc and can duplicate my routine.

That makes sense, but why not have a backup ready to go immediately, and repair the system after hours?

Also, anyone have thoughts on a VPS for execution of discretionary trading for increasing reliability of the trading system, internet connection, power, etc? And using a trading workstation just for charting, placement/modification of orders, etc.

I've reached out to sam and read the threads, but curious to hear everyone's thoughts here on doing this vs building your own and attempting to duplicate that kind of reliability/redundancy, etc.

I absolutely appreciate that for some people portability is necessary. If you grab a laptop with DisplayPort out, then you can use an EVGA displayport hub to run 3 monitors. It wont do 1920 x 1200, but from memory 1920 x 1080 is fine - there are some specs floating around somewhere

I too am looking to build a new system with capabilities of doing trading and back testing so this thread couldn't have come at a better time. Here is where I'm at right now:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-ASUS GRYPHON Z87 DDR3 1600 LGA 1150

-Intel Chip Processor 3.3 4 BX80646E31230V3

-G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin SDRAM DDR3 1866

-ASUS 2 GB DDR3 Graphics Card GT640-DCSL-2GD3

-SeaSonic G Series 550-Watt ATX12V/EPS12V

-Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 120GB( already have 1 kingston 120gb ssd)

-Fractal Design Define R4 or Fractal Design Define Mini (smaller isn't necessary but if I don't lose functionality I'll go that way)

-Windows 7 64 bit prem or pro (any reasons to go one way or the other?)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm new here and I'm not trying to hijack this thread but I felt like since my build is based directly off this info that starting a new thread might not be best. I'll be buying within the next few days so any advice would be great.

Thanks,
CW273

Consider i7-4770K which can be overclocked (use auto mode these days) for a bit more oomph for back testing etc - but want after market cooler if overclocking.
few differences with home v pro, such as 16GBmemory max on home v 32 on pro and cant backup to network on home - see all at Windows 7 Home Premium vs. Windows 7 Professional - Windows 7 - Good Gear Guide by PC World Australia

GPU is bit long in tooth now. Realize its a silent card, however the new series from Nvidia are incredibly power efficient. Not sure what you are doing monitor wise and number as this impacts choice of card.

-I'm really hesitant about OC'ing as I want my system to be rock solid stable, and the power/heat savings of the Xeon really are appealing to me.

-Looks like Win7 pro is the winner

-As far as number of monitors, I'm too early in my journey of becoming a trader to really know what I'll need down the line so I figured this less expensive card will run the two I have now plus two more. But I'm looking into the newer Nvidia cards now to research what I'm giving up with this older model.

Thanks for the help!

I would plan for at least 4 monitors. Screen space is always at a premium for traders.

-I'm really hesitant about OC'ing

in that case check out the recommendation by medias which was a good one - the Vanguard B85 - basically a non-overclocking/few less features version of the Gryphon - ie same TUF build design. About $50 difference between the two boards for o'clocking, more SATA6 and USB3 ports, higher performance audio, and more PCIe 16 (dual 8) lanes... Gryphon has 5 yr wty, Vanguard only 3. Its a shame ASUS don't do an H87 TUF series board

As far as monitors go, stick to IPS, either what I listed previously, or even the Dell 27" IPS 2560 x 1440. For intraday trading, I actually use 3 x 24" monitors in portrait mode for one chart, and then the fourth is just for a 30M of the same instrument. For my stock trading slower time frame stuff, I'll run 8 charts across 4 monitors, with broker platform and /or other windows to come to the front... but for the small time frame stuff - that massive chart is great as you see the forest for the trees and avoid being myopic.

I said it earlier, and with a rig as big as that, you're the big dog now.

BigMike used to be the big dog, not any more.

hey, that's the third try, and perhaps my half military / half wall street, American-ized term of respect doesn't translate...

but to those who know.....

you're the big dog now!
