I have been setting up some single screen templates in Ninja, thinking I may do some swing type trading
on some different instruments.
Do you think there would be any security issues with such an adventure?
Do you think someone could actually hack through my firewall, access my trading account and abscond with
the booty?
Although that seems nearly impossible, I do have other sensitive credit info in the contacts area. But heck,
almost everyone hanging in there is on a lap top... If they were getting hacked, I would think the place would
be empty... I bet Starbucks puts big weight on security. They don't want hacking episodes hitting the
cybersphere.
Would you guys trade in a Starbucks?
I guess I should see if the CQG even likes the bandwidth of the wireless....
I would not worry about hacking on WPA2 - much less about a trading account linked to a bank account which seems "airtight foolproof" (though there is no such thing in cybersecurity). WEP is a different matter. Easy to crack which makes it tempting even for borderline-honest folks I guess. A teenager in Singapore got 7 years (and caning) for stealing the neighbors WiFi.
Side topic:
We think of spotty internet because as futures traders every millisecond matters; however there have been real stories of stock traders - guys living in the hills making millions even though the current prices and their own "fills" reports reached them a week after the actual trading!
So Starbucks + say, 4G as backup seems decent enough.
It's not the WPA or WEP that you need to be concerned about when using a public network, it's the local security settings on your PC. I've sat in airports and browsed other people's photos who were on the same airport network. Windows sharing is usually enabled through a wizard when you first join your pc to a network, most people just click "next" without reading the warnings. If you are not computer savy I would be careful about using your laptop on public networks no matter what you are doing.
Without decent knowledge about Windows security settings, you shouldn't use public networks at all.

Is there a quick read somewhere I could dive into to get my rig locked down tighter? Or is this power user stuff. Something I, most assuredly, am not .

You're welcome... If you google Windows Sharing for your version of windows, say Windows 7 there should be a lot of beginner guides out there. Mostly you just want to make sure that none of your folders are shared for public / anonymous access. Best if you can disable sharing completely. Enabling the Windows firewall will also help however it can cause other problems. The last remaining advice I can give you is to not make more than one change at a time. Change something, test everything, change something else, so it doesn't become too difficult to troubleshoot what caused problems. 20 years as an IT guy has taught me that.
I never admit how much I know in this area but just read my first line again...
I KNOW with very little time and effort ALL connections on a public WIFI can be compromised.
After gaining access to your IP address on WIFI, the connection can be 'sniffed' and ALL of your activity on the network can be recreated or monitored as if the attacker is using your machine.
Althought 4G is not 100% secure, the number of people able to compromise it is much smaller.
(and those guys already have your banking information anyway)
