I didn't see any performance degradation or improvement. It's almost as it just changed the user interface.

My computers are around 3-5 years old. I try to replace every 3 years or so, mainly notebooks as they start to fall apart according to the IT group of a company I worked in the past.

Btw, I found that initial lock screen annoying mainly if you have to login into several computers.

I used these instructions to eliminate it:

How to Disable the Lock Screen on Windows 10 Ť Windows Tips

It will prompt you directly into your login screen, just enter your password like Windows 7. Why complicate things?

To me it's as if they made some minor changes to the Windows 7 interface; performance so far, as well as compatibility, is not noticeably different. I never used Windows 8, but the interface is very different from what I saw of 8.

I would say it works fine, and I have no regret about making the change. It probably is better to do it, just because 7 and 8 will not be getting that much attention from Microsoft going forward.

Bob.

I always do clean installs, NEVER upgrade.

Mike

Mike, When you do a CLEAN install of Win 10 do you use an ISO image, and what serial number do you use - your Win 7 or if you have 8 then use the it. When upgrading Win 10 uses what is on the computer, but with a clean install what happens.

Does anyone know of a way to change the background and menu bars for the file explorer (and all apps for that matter) to a dark theme. Windows 10 is ridiculously WHITE and incredibly painful on the eyes.

I did some searching and found a registry key hack you can do which enables a dark theme, however it only applies to certain apps/windows: How to Enable Windows 10?s Hidden Dark Theme

I've also enabled the deluminate app for Chrome.

But I can't seem to find anyway to get rid of all the white in explorer (and any apps that have explorer panels).

For a software company (with a large number of programmers), you would think they would know how bad it is for your eyes to be staring at white screens all day.

Edit: Also, is there a way to stop Windows from automatically downloading updates? In Windows 7 and prior you simply told windows to notify you when updates were available and you would decide when to download and install them. Now you have no choice. Well I pay for my data, I pay for every gig I use,...so I need to decide when to download anything.

This site details how to set your wifi connection to metered so you wont automatically download updates over wifi,...but there doesn't appear to be anything for ethernet. So if you're connected via ethernet, you have no choice.

Argh!!! At this rate I will be returning to Linux. Maybe this new Windows is wonderful for people who have only ever used Windows and are use to not having choices. But for others, this is incredibly painful.

Diversification is the only free lunch

@perryg

What you have to do is:

1. Download the Win 10 ISO software with this tool Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help and burn it on a DVD.

2. UPGRADE your Win 7 or 8 to Win10 with the Media Creation Tool

3. Then with this program Windows Keyfinder you can find your Windows 10 Product License Key

4. Finally you can install a clean Win 10 with your ISO DVD and the new license key.

Hope it helped

My situation was different because I installed the beta way back. So the beta was free to everyone. And because I ran the beta, they gave me a free license for the final version. My understanding is I could run this indefinitely on this machine.

When I build a new system here in a few months, I will again do a clean install. At that point, from what I've read I will likely lose my activation rights because the hardware changed, meaning I would need to purchase a Windows 10 pro license, which is only like $140. I haven't really researched it much yet as I am still a few months from a new system.

Thanks for this idea, although I would NEVER download anything from that website given their reputation for spyware.

I searched and found an open source Sourceforge project:

Enchanted Keyfinder

I just tested it, and it did find my Windows 10 key! I was all excited. But then I remembered the beta key was public and same for everyone, so I googled the key. Yup, match to beta key. So my key is not private to me, so guessing pretty sure I can't use it for a new install, even if it's linked to an activated rights with my Microsoft insider account.

I still don't get this Windows 10 license key system anyway.

The Windows 10 key of my mothers laptop are the same I have on my own build pc.
She did the upgrade from Windows 8.1 and I did it from the Windows 7.
My wife's Windows 10 key are different but she uses an other language.

Does Microsoft now use only 1 product key for 1 product???

I noticed the same thing, I upgraded 3 PCs and used the Key finder utility. All 3 had the same Key. Go figure...
