Since we're talking about SSD's, if you are using Windows 7 (not sure about linux yet) you can turn on the compress this disk to save space and you will probably have a lot more room for your trading data. My SC folder is 64.6 gigs, but only 13.6 gigs on disk with compression turned on. Read on toms or anand, i forget which, that you don't give up anything in performance so no reason not to do it. I couldn't tell any difference after turning it on. Not sure how well other platforms' data compresses though, so results may or may not be as good.
i am using MacMini with windows 8 on it since an year, it cam with 1tb hared drive and 4GB ram and i7, i upgraded it with 16GB ram and added 160GB SSD, installed Windows 8 on 1TB and set my documents on SSD and all the trading software in SSD. Also i am running oracle DB in 1TB with temp space in SSD.
i moved from regular PC (server) to MacMini because of the nice of cooling fans... this mac mini is running 24/7 since an year, so far no issues.
Anyone know if I can I shrink my W7 partition and W7 will still boot? Or would I have to do a clean install?
Situation is currently backing up my two computers to each other, so I pulled the internal drive out of the Genie I wasn't using to create a standalone backup drive. That way I can offload data off my trading box to my second computer, so I will have plenty of space to turn off the disk compression. I also want to shrink the partition to free up 20 gigs of space and make my SSD last longer.

Always have a known good backup before trying anything with partitions. I use Macrium Reflect personally so I can do a bare metal restore quickly if needed.
Ahem yeah, not so easy. I tried to shrink but only allowed around 800 megs because of "unmovable files". You basically have to analyze, see what the last unmovable file is, figure out which service it belongs to, stop it, then do it all over again. Took about an hour to get where I could shrink it 10%, so I figured that was good enough. But I will sleep so much better now
I tried shrinking windows xp on my second computer originally from outside and I killed it. Hence my query about W7. I really don't mind the extra bit of time if it works out ok, which it did! Thanks.
Sorry. Always have a backup first. You can use something free like Clonezilla to make a backup outside of Windows of the whole partition or disk. Then use Parted Magic outside of Windows to resize the partition.
I just assumed W7 could do it itself, but I guess that isn't possible until W42. Just use Linux, even for NTFS partitions it is better.
Did you use Device Manager on your XP machine when you tried shrinking it? XP is very, very old stuff. Better to use a current build of Parted Magic than deal with anything built-in to XP.
