Don't get 1920x1080. Get 1920x1200, it's worth it for the extra screen real estate.
My 2460's have 4 mini-displayports on the back. Don't use any solution which requires any type of adapter. Buy cards that match your monitor or vice versa, most monitors are either HDMI or DisplayPort, not both, so be sure you know what you are doing.
Frank is there a reason why it would be bad to have 3 different kind of connections? I'd go with the 2460 firepro but since this won't be a trading rig only I'm looking for a card that can support a multi monitor setup while still being able to run other various programs without a hitch. I'd love some feed back as this is the only thing holding me back from finishing my computer.
If you were to build an all around system would video card would you go with only reason I chose the Raedon 7850 was because it can support 4 monitors (granted they are different ports) and also allow me to see youtube at 1080p no problem and still let my gaming side release itself while all being on one desktop.
Also looking at 1920x1200 monitors it seems they start to leave my price range but I'll let everyone know what I decide to go with.
I bought the best ones for my needs which was two FirePro 2460's. Your needs may be different. As I mentioned in the main 6-monitor thread, I had tried the Radeon Eyefinity 5870 and 7870 and both were far more trouble than the 2460's. I would not use a 7850 due to my cable requirements.
I'm really considering just getting the two FirePro 2460's but man do they cost an arm and a leg! Don't know how you got 2 for $150!
Could you let me know why you only want to use a mini display port for your monitors and not a VGA or other means to connect monitors? Were there lag issues of some sort? Btw Big Mike appreciate all the feed back glad I can get input from a pro !
There doesn't seem to be any used ones on ebay right now.
My system is in the closet in an adjoining room, I have a hole punched thru the wall to run all my monitors, USB cable to my hub, and speaker cables. Due to the length, I needed to use a high quality yet small digital cable like HDMI or DisplayPort. I did this for heat and noise.
Make sure you do homework to know for certain you can run 4 simultaneous displays from that Radeon card. Most cards have limitations lower than the number of connectivity ports they offer, especially if you use adapters.
Thanks for that great advice XCL the idea of 7850 some helpful people over at overclock.net let me know that I wouldn't be able to run my 6 monitor setup looks like I'm back on the hunt for a gpu(s) under $400!
Having used the Eyefinity 5870 and 7870 and FirePro 2460's, I would say the FirePro 2460's are the best, because they were the only ones that work 95% of the time. I'm saying the FP2460's don't work 5% of the time but it's manageable.
You cannot play games with the FP2460's. Not games in the last 3-4 years at least.
I would keep an eye on ebay for used 2460's. I am pretty sure I paid $100 for one and $50 for the other. You might check craigslist etc.
There are also some older Quadro NVS cards. I've used them as well, it took three of them, and they were worse than the FP2460's.
I believe AMD has some new products later this year aimed at this area. Probably several months away if I remember.
Ouch several months away don't think I could wait that long! But just looked through all 32 pages of the 6 monitor thread and could not get a clear reason you did not like the eyefinity 6 card but what it really comes down to was it unstable to the point where you could not trade?
I'd like to go with the firepro but unless I can find a deal soon I may go with a Asus dc2 6950 crossfired with a 7850 for gaming.
I cannot recall specifics other than I had a lot of trouble with monitors not powering back on after they went into power saving mode (ie 30 minutes). My system never enters 'sleep' but I do power down monitors after 30 minutes. And with a very high frequency it would not power on one or more monitors, which wreaks havoc because it screws up all the Window positions for all running applications.
When I switched to FP2460's the problems went away, with the same cables.
