Hello,

IŽam trading for about 5 years now and IŽam wondering how is still using a 775 generation cpu for trading?

My setup:
Asus P5Q-E 775 board
CPU E7400 core 2 duo is running at 3,9ghz for 5 years now (watercooled).
2 x HD4350 Grafic cards with 3 22ŽŽ wide screen monitors, probable upgrade to 4 real soon.
4 gb ram

I use Ninjatrader and this is a single threated application when trading real time. I have tested my cpu at cpu benchmark for single threaded application and it has a score off 1700 and that is faster than the first generation i5,i7.
I trade 6E, GC and CL and have 12 charts open when trading.

If I look at sites that are selling the so called trading computers they mention that it is very important to have the fastest cpu because off lagging.

In task manager my cpu is always between 10% and 30%
Memory usage never above 2gb

So is it really important to have the best cpu more ram etc?
Is my computer still suitable for trading?

Thanks,
JJ

"NO"

One aspect not mentioned yet is reliability. Some components might have reduced reliability/degradation over time. I personally am more focused on reliability than sheer speed. A broken computer at the wrong moment could be rather unpleasant. That said, a new computer is no guarantee for reliability either...

As @sam028 said, if it doesn't feel slow I wouldn't worry about speed.

It depends how much income you generate with the PC. I would probably get a new one and use the old one as a backup. On the other side, if everything works fine, you may well wait until it breaks down and then replace it. This is my favourite approach, I don't touch it, if it works up to my expectations.

Don't buy one of those fancy trading PCs. They are overpriced. All you need is a reliable server from Dell, HP or Lenovo. Make sure that the CPU is fast a enough, then add 8 GBYte, a 2D passive graphics adapter (now heat, no noise) and you are done. Should be available around € 1,100 all included.

My server has a power consumption of about 60 W (idle) 100 W (running), add about 40 W for three 24'' screens. While I am typing this, I am below 100 W, which is less than my old light bulbs here consumed before I replaced them with LEDs. Low energy consumption also means low heat and low noise, because that is what the energy is used for.

Thanks,

I was thinking the same way. I think i will wait until NT8 is out. NT8 will be multhi threaded in real time so then we can take 100% advantage off a quad or six core i7 until than I think it has no benefit going to a new computer.

Is there a benchmark for nt7 so we can see what the different cpu do in nt7?

There whas a benchmark for nt6.5
I ran it in NT7 but it took 4min and 25 seconds to compleet.
There was someone with a e7300 and his times where 2min 49sec.

@jsengxx2: Yes there is a benchmark. Take the VWAP from the NinjaTrader forum, apply it to an ES 03-12 chart with settings COBC = false. Then let it run in 500x speed on your market replay.

Measure how long it takes to run through a trading day.

Without the indicator the trading day would take 1440/500 = 2.88 minutes to play. If you attain that result

-> let me know what PC you use
-> let me see the screenshots for the CPU load as shown by process explorer
