I have pretty much the same problem, or one very similar. Specifically, when my CPU trends above 80% for more than a few minutes in duration, the computer shuts down ( black screens and box turns itself off ).
What I tried in no particular order:
1. adding more memory, no effect
2. swapping out memory banks with fresh, no effect
3. swapping out Hard Drive, no effect
4. swapping out Graphics Card, no effect
My processor does run hot (80C Idle) with stock intel cooling fan, so I was considering trying a liquid cooling system for the CPU. My theory is when the CPU is running above 70% the heat buildup is going to skyrocket and with very little headroom to begin with will quickly trip across the protective CPU temp threshold causing the MB to power down.
In the mean time I am using a two computer strategy. I use one dedicated trading computer (the 'bad' box) for Ninja Trader only. Stable as a rock, runs below 20% CPU and consumes almost no resources. I then use the second computer (laptop) for everything else, meaning web browser, skype, streaming (omnovia, WebEx)... and so forth ). Result, both computers run just fine, no more crashing computers. The problem I can't get around is the need to stream my desktop from the dedicated Trading Computer. Since streaming the desktop ramps the CPU above 70%, it's not happening on the bad box. My 'new' solution is to build a new box to replace the bad one which I 'hope' with all new components will miraculously cure my streaming desktop while running NinjaTrader issue.
Just a possibility. How long have you had the computer? Sometimes the stock cooling fan doesn't have enough cooling paste or it dries out fast for some reason which can disrupt the heat transfer effect of the fan through the paste. I've found replacing the dried up paste (after scratching it off the cpu) with some new paste from Fry's often takes care of the overheating cpu problem in some laptops. (such as HP over a few years old). Or the plastic lock screws holding the fan to the cpu is lose or broken (in some desktops.)
The system HDD had a dodgy controller - I replaced that with an SSD, which I paid for. I can get a replacement HDD on warranty but I still have it in as a spare right now but will move all my data off it soon-ish.
I replaced the motherboard too - sort of a "just in case" thing.
At the end of the repair, the guy building it 'didn't like the way the processor was responding' so he put in a latest gen i7 free of charge.
It has been with me about 2 weeks. The strangest thing is that it 'feels' different. This is probably my imagination but there's something about it now, other than the improved performance that makes it feel more solid.
I am having the exact problem you described in this thread. How exactly do you determine that it was caused by the SSD controller failure? My new build (6 months old) of Win-7 with SSD PC suddenly started randomly reboot itself 1 or more times a day, but I can't find any error in the event log except for the shut down and restart.
I ran SSD utilities (SSDLife and SSD Magic) but none reported controller failure.
Had a similar problem with computer shutting down unexpectedly. I posted a thread in a tech support forum and was able to solve it.
