I have installed it on my ESXi 5.0 Update 1 host, and it seems ok, although I had to select Windows Server 2008 R2 as the VM type and not Windows 8 to get it to install. I will probably upgrade when it's available.
Just a reminder that anyone considering virtualization and buying new hardware (or considering their current hardware) should verify their CPU has VT-x (Intel) or AMD-V (AMD) hardware virtualization support vs the older and slower software-based virtualization.
You'll want to verify this support by checking Intel or AMDs CPU specs on their respective website using the exact model of the CPU.
This test is only needed for Intel, which has the nasty habit of switching features on and off depending on model. AMD pretty much is full virtualization on anything that has more than 2 cores in the product line (i.e. they introduced it when they went to 4 cores, all more recent product lines have full virtualization support).
Windows Server 2012 was released to manufacturing yesterday so I thought I'd install it and have a peek. Works well. Also, VMware ESXi 5.1 will be release on 11-Sep-2012 in case you were thinking of installing it, might want to wait until then.
Oh dude, Server 2012 was RTM'd LAST MONTH - not yesterday. It was made available for the MSDN subscribers and the general public (GA = General Availability) yesterday, and they were LAST on a long list. For example, I downloaded my valid version from the MS servers on the 16th of August, the day all SPLA contract partners got it, while enterprises got it on the 15th
GA != RTM.
For example I also have (valid, licensed) versions of Windows 8 available since hat day, and the GA date is 26th of October.
I just upgraded to VMware ESXi 5.1 from 5.0 and it was pretty painless. Done in less than one hour, no issues at all. VMs auto-start now when the hosts boot.
Well, after moving to new offices, we will start upgrading our remining 4 virtual servers to 2012 tomorrow to get the new Hyper-V features. One machine here (virtual desktop host = powerfull graphics card for RemoteFX) and the AutoTrading system in chicago got ugprades 2 weeks ago.
Guys, moving with a company is hell. Email is still down, all my DNS are still down, now setting up the external part of our infrastructrure (well, reorganization on top of the move)
