Here is a screenshot of what often happens, when starting Chrome. It hangs upon loading google.com (my default page is google.de).

A restart solves the problem.

My other 4 browsers don't show this behavior.

Please register on futures.io to view futures trading content such as post attachment(s), image(s), and screenshot(s).

Hi Fat Tails,

this behaviour is extremly unusual. I am absolutely satisfied with Chrome [v. 21.0.1180.79 m.] - its fast and from my point of view reliable.

In my settings Chrome starts with 10 pages and I can't remember last Chrome crash since months.

So far my experiences...

I am sure you have checked your settings, firewall etc.

One good test could be starting a portable chrome version which has the charm that it doesn't install itself into the system.

You can find it here for example

Enjoy.

Silly question but... have you ever tried to change your default page to google.com to see the reaction?

I never had that problem with the default page (I use google.com).
By the way, I removed the add-ons and so far so good. All links are opening OK. Just switched on the Calendar e Gmail add-ons since they were the first ones to have and never saw that behavior with them on.

If I become half a percent smarter each year, I'll be a genius by the time I die

I really don't mind. I close it and start it again and it works. It is a bug inside the browser, who knows.

The version installed is 21.0.1180.79

I've been using Chrome too, and Palemoon (a faster version of firefox).

Chrome is rock solid. And faster than either IE or FF. The only times I've had issues in either firefox or chrome were when I had issues with add-ons. The problem with the add ons is that even when you think you have removed them there may still be effects on your browser.

So, I'd suggest that the op uninstall chrome and delete the user directories. Then start again with just the add-ons you want. You can use synchronization first to save your passwords and bookmarks but I'd suggest you do the add-on installation manually given there is obviously something wrong with your current setup.

FYI, the extensions I am using without issue are:
Adblock Plus (Beta) 1.2
Adblock+ Element Hiding Helper
Blank New Tab
Clearly
Context Menu Search
Evernote Web Clipper
goo.gl URL Shortener
Vimium

I've heard of issues with some of the video downloading and image grabbing extensions. Chrome gives them a lot of leeway and perhaps that can allow problems.

Mines the same version (just the current update) but the update process will just keep inheriting the problems from whenever you installed the rogue extension (or a stray alpha particle hit your computer and xxx it up the xxx). Good luck

A couple of weeks ago I was having a problem that certain buttons stopped working, I think pressing images stopped enlarging them, etc. I tried disabling all of the extensions but the problem remained. In the end what fixed it was uninstalling and re installing chrome. Everything is synced to the Google account so after re syncing mostly everything was back to how it was before, a relatively painless process.

Thank you for your answer, but I do not even know how to find out which add-ons are installed. Firefox shows me easily the add-ons, while Chrome does not show anything. When I try to download new add-ons, I get something which looks like a fun fair for adolescents, including a Chinese Shopping Assistant. This is really commercial overkill.

Please see the difference:

(1) Firefox

Please register on futures.io to view futures trading content such as post attachment(s), image(s), and screenshot(s).

(2) Chrome

But I do not know which media players etc. are installed and cannot deactivate them.

Chrome pretty much has 1 button, the wrench at the top right corner, which is where you access everything. I see you have 1 extension with a button installed, the green icon left of the wrench, if you right click it you have the option to "manage extensions" which is a way to get to the extensions. Perhaps in trying to oversimplify things chrome Google has dug the settings a little. Pressing the wrench, then expanding the "Tools" menu shows the "Extensions" shortcut or Settings, then menu on left, "Extensions".

The screenshot you posted is the web appstore where you download extensions from.

You can do all the math you can do, but you can't find the extensions in chrome? Dude, what's up? Wrench, Settings, Extensions (on the left side)

I think the problem is elsewhere. I was just astonished that when installing Acrobat Reader, Java, Silverlight, Google Maps this would automatically generate the required add-ons on Firefox, but nothing on Chrome... The only add-on I do have there, is the website rating from Avast!.

But I have never really checked, whether such add-ons are needed.
