Would something like a HughsNet Satellite gag be a viable option then?

I know there is a ping delay. But as long as I avoid holding positions through thick thunderstorms or
snow storms, it should be fairly robust.

Certainly much better than cellular broadband.

What do you guys think?

Just in case your connectivity further deteriorates, here is a fancy backup solution, although it does not work well during the tornado season.

The connection speed is measured in wingdings per roundtrip. Specially adapted to rural areas in Tennessee.

Just in case that you cannot afford a VPS.

Ha Ha!!!! lol .... still considered state of the art in my area of Tennessee

That is an expensive backup option. Most people have ready access to cellular as a backup, but installing satellite as a backup would be costly.

You don't want to use satellite as a primary connection unless you are in the middle of nowhere and can't get 3G or 4G.

And I would disagree on 'much better than cellular'. 4G cellular is faster than many people's home internet and has a respectable latency. But the convenience of 3G or 4G is that you already have it, just use your phone to broadcast a wi-fi signal to your desktop, buy a $10 USB dongle if needed to receive the wi-fi signal, and now you have a backup internet plan.

Good to see someone else from Nashville running around the forum. I understand your internet connection pain, as I have learned not to trust even the local cable internet.

I have a swing trading bot and rent a dedicated server ($150/month from Softlayer) in Dallas TX for it to run on. I am a bit of a tech nerd. That is more costly than a VPS but gives the same effect, 99.99% up-time. I can remote desktop into the server and watch everything running like it is on my own PC.

I would use a server like that even if I was trading discretionarily. Make a trade, put in profit target and stop, and if my internet dies, then I would still have the peace of mind that my trade would work until completion on the server. And the charts would stay up to date while your home internet is crashed.

I would definitely take the time to investigate the VPS / dedicated server route as a means to manage the fact that your home internet is not great. I recommend the VPS as it is more cost effective, and it sounds like sam028 will steer you in the right direction.

I think you guys have just solved my rural woes!!!

Thanks, Mike.... I'm afraid this discussion is for my primary connection at the house... Man, I mean I live
WAY out of Nashville, in the sticks. We bought a piece of land and had to run water and power out to it.
No small distance. Every time I call the cable guys to see when they will be out in my area, they just laugh!!

My backup plan is the trading desk on speed dial!!

lol

So good .... it appears the Virtual server gag is just the ticket. I won't pursue the satellite bit.
