I have Win8 CP running on my main machine. Absolutely hate the Metro UI bits. On a 27inch 2560x1440 resolution display Metro is hopeless. It is nonsense and a bad user experience. It'll work great on 10.1inch tablets though and beats the crap out of IOS & Android. Not so good on desktops.

Having said that, the desktop portion is amazing. It is bloody fast, this thing really flies. It's feels like I have upgraded the whole computer. I have a Quad Core CPU and I suspect that Win 8 is making really good use of all the cores because *everything* is noticeably faster/snappier including Ninjatrader 7.

I use MB Trading and Interactive Brokers. Both of them installed with no issues. NT7 install failed the first time because Win8 does not have .Net 3.5 out-of-the-box. But as soon as the install failed, Win 8 popped out a message asking if I would like to install .Net 3.5. Click Yes and after it is finished, NT7 installs without a hitch.

Restored NT7 to my backup and connected to my broker. On Win 7 it used to take about 2-3 minutes after clicking connect to broker before NT was ready. It felt very heavy and unresponsive. On Win 8 10 seconds at most and done. It's very impressive.

I have to agree with the assessment. Installed it ona VM yesterday with Visual Studio. Feels alienating. Will give it some days to find out how comfortable I am. Usability is - varying. Metro sucks to go back there all the time to select a program, and the menu really breks apart when a software installs tons of smaller tools that are rarely used (like Visual Studio - they are ok in a sub-menu but on the main one... ouch).

Will see how it goes.

ya ive read that.. i really think you should have to tweak the OS to get the 'standard' features back for power users.. not that i mind the foofoo stuff, but i really only see that as useful for tablets..

New hands on from ars technica:

Windows 8 on the desktop—an awkward hybrid

Quick snippet, but hit the link for the full article:

Quoting
It's not perfect, but neither is the Start menu. Having used Windows 8 quite a bit for a number of weeks (not quite full-time, but routinely, for hours each day), I think the Start screen works at least as well as the Start menu ever did. Once Windows 8 Metro apps become more abundant and my pinned apps thus become more useful, I think the Start screen will be a clear winner.

It's probably harsh to call it Vista which was a step back but it looks like its going to create the same situation for W7 users that Vista did for XP users --- why change?

It looks to me like it will be a good tablet OS but really offer nothing worthwhile to the trader or typical W7 user. At this point I'm looking forward to evaluating Windows 9 but I would like to be surprised into wanting Windows 8.

Here the corrected list:

Windows 95 - Bad
WindowsNT4 - Good
Windows 95c - Good
Windows 98 - Bad
Windows 98SE - Good
Windows ME - Bad
Windows2000 Good
Winodws XP - Good
Windows Vista - Bad
Windows 7 - Good
Windows 8 - ???

Sorry the sequence is not clear...
-> Win8 Kernel/Diver good, GUI (compatibility) bad
=> Win8 + ClassicShell = StartButton + "old" Desktop is OK and many time faster as Win7
