I believe that MAlwareBytes Anti-Malware is the best on the market. There is a Free version and a Pro version for only $24.95. Here is the link Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

I use the Pro version. This was the only product that was able to detect and remove a virus that landed on my computer although I had other protection in place. I strongly recommend this product and after using the free version opted to the PRO version.

I've been using ESET (NOD32) Smart Security 4 (antivirus, antispyware, personal firewall, antispam) for the last two years. (not free) No problems. Stays in the background well, doesn't seem to interfere or slow down the system. And automatic email and web site browsing scan of scripts and web elements.

The strength of the free version of Malwarebytes is the removal of malware, once your PC is already infected. However, it is much better to avoid an infection.

He are some of the shortcomings of the free version:

-> There is no permanent process running in the background.
-> There is no scheduler for automatic updates of the software.
-> The update of the malware database needs to be done manually.

This means that the free version of Malwarebytes cannot be recommended as a basic anti-virus tool. It should only be installed as a secondary tool. You can then scan your PC from time to time - for example every two weeks - in order to check whether it has been infected. Malwarebytes also checks the registry and can disable malware.

The professional version also does the automatic updates and background scanning as required.

I've been using "Avast free version" for several years.. I wouldn't use anything else... you can't even tell it's installed, unless it finds a problem ... no noticable CPU usage, no noticable ram usage, it works invisibly....

I vote for dropping $25 for Malwarebytes Pro. We have it on all our PC's and laptops and consider it money well-spent.

I had used both Avast and Avira in the past, but they were having very bad interactions with Ninjatrader and Chrome. That was three or four years ago.

Anyone currently using them with Ninjatrader? I would be glad to hear if they now get along better with Ninjatrader.

Thanks for the info, Harry.

I'm using AVIRA's free Antivir version along with Ninja Trader for more than 2 years now and I never experienced any AVIRA related problems or issues so far.

In fact I have used Avast and Avira Antivir in parallel with Windows 7 64-bit and NinjaTrader over the last year and I am still using it that way. The only problem I have encountered are the updates, which may cause a temporary slow down or freeze of the PC during 10 or 20 seconds.

Avira Antivir: You can select the update interval, the default value is 6 hours. I do not think that you can opt out of automatical updates. But Avira typically carries out the first update shortly after you have booted your PC. If you have the habit of switching it off every night, you could set the update interval to something like 20 hours. Thus it will only do the update once after you switched on your PC.

Avast: You can select the update frequency, the default value is 60 minutes. If you do not wish automatic updates, you can opt for "ask when an update is available" or "manual update" (not recommended). Avast also does an update after you have booted your system.

Both programs only do the updates, when there are new virus definitions.
