I have just purchased a new workstation, which makes me review various anti-virus programs. I think that there are four software packages that are worth to be considered.

Here are the download links (in alphabetical order):

Avast Free Antivirus

avast! Free Antivirus | Download Antivirus Protection Software

AVG Free Antivirus

AVG Free | Antivirus Free Download | Free Virus Protection | Germany

Avira Free Antivirus

Avira anti-virus for private users

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

Let us use this thread and evaluate these or other free packages.

I have personally used Avira Antivirus and Microsoft Security Essentials in the past. Both packages have performed correctly, I have actually never caught a virus or had a major problem.

Avira Antivir throws in advertisements from time to time and considerably slows down the PC during a scheduled update. Microsoft Security Essentials is free of advertising, but from my experience has a negative impact on CPU performance, as it puts its nose into everything.

I have found a few more professional comments on the performance of the above software packages, which I will post below.

The most detailed comparison that I have found on the web is located here:

Just in case of a broken link, I have attached some of the tables comparing the software packages below.

Of course, I am not able to verify the quality and correctness of the review.

I use and am happy with Avast Pro version, which is not free, but I needed to use the SafeZone for shopping & banking and the Sandbox. Besides the brand I think all Pro versions are much more secure and as far as I am concerned I am not willing to save money on my PC security.

I've used Avira (both free and commercial versions) for 10 years now and I'll stick with it. I currently use Avira commercial version on the VMware Fusion/Windows side of my Mac machine. Although, there are Antivirus software/tools for Mac OS X, I don't seem to need any Antivirus for the Mac OS X side of my Mac.

By the way, Avira is native to @ Fat Tails, you know !

I use AVG - Free version (also native to FatTails) without a problem.

I too have never had a virus etc since using it.

This is loaded on my trading machine. I leave it on while trading (never caused a problem).

I have never noticed it's automatic updates causing any performance issues with the machine.

I do however schedule the weekly scan to occur on a Sunday, outside of the trading week.

Highly recommended.

I have not used everything but . . .
If I find a friend has Norton or McAfee on his machine I make him take it off -- such a bloated resource hog.
I install AVG for most non-tech users I know, it is fast stable and low hassle. Great for you mom.
AVG can be disabled by the more advanced new viruses
I have had better luck using AVAST it has a screen saver scan and boot up scan that are both very cool.
Avast has more "false positives" then AVG.
AVAST and AVG will co-exist on the same machine too.
I tried ARIVA and the thing has more pop ups that I can take, it is like having yorkshire terrier bouncing up in front of your screen.

I used AVG for years and liked it. One day I managed to pick up a really nasty malware. I tried a dozen different programs, MalWareBytes was the only one that was able to eradicate the problem.

I'm just a simple man trading a simple plan.
