If one is unsure about opening an exe file or whatever one can use a so called sandbox.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandbox_(computer_security)

... for example Sandboxie 4.08 64-bit

Download Sandboxie 4.08 - FileHippo.com

The professional version has, but as far as I know, the free version does not have it.

Yes, you are (partly) right - I've just checked that free version has only AutoSandbox, the Manual is only in paid version:

I'm a big fan of sandboxie. worth noticing that sandboxie got taken over by Invincea which includes real-time detection and notification of malware and some other features:

Seems that the new "Bitdefender" product is now one of the best rated out there, and they have a free version.
Anybody have any experience with this?

Ad-Aware's new Free Antivirus also got some great scores at PCMAG.com but doesnt seem to be included in the tests at av-comparatives.org or av-test.org

I've been using Bitdefender free version for a little over a month or so since Fat tails posted info regarding how bad MSE is.
Works great so far...zero complaints

-- but it offesr the worst protection of all AV solutions tested here

Why not install a free solution that offers higher detection rates and faster updates?

I install the free, but ...
good: very "light" for old computers. Very good for memory. Really good. And good to detect.
bad: I want personalyze and not possible... one example:
I have a some files with some "bad" malware.... but some of them it permit not clean, but others not permit...
so ...I uninstall
But the pro said that can personalize...

In past I have Avira... but not very good.
At moment i use AVG but to early to say ... but promising ... detect very welll and ask to me...

of course all free.
But with some complement... like Ccleaner and Malewarebytes... and I have Comodo fireall that also controlo some malware...all good fo clean PC
