Holy mother of pearl...that is awesome Mike.
Same with the university connection, Cory.
This what I'm working with.
Seems to work okay but of course I would
love to have something better.

Yes that is a 1 Gigabit connection, all mine. The speedtest is slower than the server, mainly because the remote speedtest server isn't as fast as my box (bandwidth being used, whereas on mine no bandwidth used).

My home speedtest is another story unfortunately. And it's the fastest available in my area.

May I ask what server setup you have with the company in Chicago?
I'm interested.

Steadfast. Although I recommend contacting @sam028, as he leases from Steadfast and his prices are more affordable for the average user.

what upload, download, ping,,,speed are you folks using to trade

BTW, this has been discussed numerous times before.

Generally speaking, the slowest "broadband" connection will be plenty fast for trading.

Latency matters much more than throughput. Upgrading to higher throughput (faster) broadband connections has zero impact for trading, for the most part.

More focus should be placed on reliability (outages). Also you should hook to your router via a wired ethernet connection instead of wireless, to prevent latency delays or "pauses/hiccups".

There is generally nothing you can do to improve latency, short of moving closer to the exchange or renting a server near the exchange.

further on from what BM says, streamlining the process from "making the decision" to "sending the order" is usually where the most cost effective improvements can be found.

For instance, if you have 1-click-trading, how far from your "ready" spot to the trade button is it? do you actually practise reaction times (to an extent, these can be trained to get better)?

another thig. ping test are only useful if you are pinging to the location your orders need to get. the number of hops also makes a difference here...

... but the bottom line is that internet speeds probably account for only 20% (pareto) of the improvement in overall latency that can be gained by better design of process.

To answer to the OP question, all depends of the trading style.
I had a very profitable friend in a middle of nowhere, with a not very reliable connection, low bandwidth, 400ms ping...

And just to show who is the real boss here:

Below please find my parameters.
I use a VPS located in France.
The purpose of this VPS is not really the speed/broadband, but more:
(i) very low probability of crash
(ii) very low risk of virus etc. (since I just use it for trading: no e-mail, no Internet surf, etc.)
(iii) very low probability of loss of connection (between the VPS and the world), which is safer for stop orders.

Nicolas
