For a 64-bit Win 7 system, this is a non-issue. Each app, can only use so much, but the system can use more than 4GB.

Indeed, but windows apps are not perfect and I would give it a try (it costs you a couple of minutes), these are all empirical tries.

My guess is a bad disk subsystem. Drive, cable, controller, etc.

I experienced an interrupt hang on an older 3ware controller that would match your description. It was due to a bad sata cable on one of my four drives in the array.

This is one I have not checked. I have a single PCI based SSD card, so NO cables, but it is one of the only things that has not been swapped out.

All of these "hard" type failures typically are going to crash/hang your system though, not just cause a window to stop updating. I have checked my event log, and there are no errors of significance (just a few dns not reachable warnings).

At this point, I will likely just upgrade to the new processors coming out shortly, but I was hoping to keep this system around for other purposes. I have built a lot of machines over the years, but this one has me stumped.

Anyone wanna buy a PC, works great most of the time ;-)

I've seen this on several occasions actually in my old day job of a big storage vendor. But really any card can hang an interrupt, storage or not. The result is generally the same, everything appears frozen for maybe 8-15 seconds depending on the settings of the controller itself (timeouts). In my case, I was clued in because of two things: 1) I would hear the 3ware controller reset the disks (click) on the timeout, and 2) I would receive an email from the 3ware controller telling me it reset the disks. But the effect was the same as you describe.

You might start with upgrading to the newest firmware on your SSD, after you have a known good backup.

It does not momentarily hang, the window is permanently frozen until I resize it (although it still takes input, like a mouse click can still close a position - you hear the ding). It is like it thinks the window does not need to be refreshed, so it doesn't. I had originally thought a timer event was lost, which would cause the problem because a chart window event loop might get hung and the timer never gets restarted. Unfortunately I was able to verify that was not the case using a spy program looking at the events.

Losing an interrupt somewhere is a distinct possibility though.

OK gotcha. When I used to use NinjaTrader, I had all kinds of odd windows problems like what you just described. I am not alone as I saw others in the forum mention the same problems. NinjaTrader could never duplicate. But just a thought, I don't think you use NT but you might keep it in mind.

I'd shut down any antivirus and firewall stuff, then determine if it only happens on just one app, like NT, or if it happens with others as well.

I had a problem when using WinXP with nVidia display adapters and I had to change the 'troubleshooting' options for the display driver. There were several options, Disable DirectX, hardware acceleration, etc. with each one getting more restrictive. Access is through the option where you change screen resolution, then under 'advanced settings'.

Good luck, I never figured out what was causing my problem and had to live with it dialed back a notch. FWIW, my Win7 system has an ATI card and the troubleshooting tab is disabled so I can't verify if this still applies.
