Quick question. I'm wondering if any of you have had your password stolen recently? It is something that has never happened to me. This morning I see a bunch of spam sent from my account. I've never filled out any forms on a fishing site......

I use AOL, so it seems to me it's either a problem at AOL, or an Outlook problem. I see those as being the only security problems I could have.

Anyone else had similar problems recently?

Hi forrestang,

I received an email last week saying my email account had been hacked and they needed me to verify that I was the correct owner of the account.

They said the account would be shut down for my protection until I provided the correct verification.

They asked for username, password, DOB, Correct answers to security questions.

I called my provider immediately to confirm it did not come from them and to report these scumbags.

Yeah, 'fishing,'..... I KNOW that wasn't my problem though. I've changed my password. I'm doing some virus scan stuff now.

Exactly! Already on it.

On another note, virus scans, only have a few adware problems, nothing that would scream some type of trojan.

1. Never use the same password on more than one site.

2. If you freak out at #1, its because you need a good Password Manager. I use KeePass, but there are other "more friendly" ones.

3. If you ever receive an email from a facebook, bank, credit card, ebay, (blah blah) type service asking you to "Go here and verify your account information" - it is a scam/phishing, do not click on anything in the email.

4. If you browse time-wasting sites like facebook or twitter, it is best to never click any links from users. Some of these can setup exotic looking websites that mimic the appearance of facebook or ebay or twitter or your bank, etc, just to fool you into logging in again - and then they steal your info. Phishing.

5. Don't download junk and install it. Most free software stuff you find from a google search is loaded with malware and spyware. Only download stuff you trust to be from a reputable vendor. If you don't know if someone is reputable, they aren't.

6. Never say yes to "do you want to tell your friends and family about this great deal" ? or "load your address book" ? This type of stuff is how some sites mass-spam all of your contacts in your address book with malware. If a program needs access to your email service (like gmail, hotmail, yahoo), then you don't want that program on your system.

7. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It is free, and is actually good. It will help prevent you from installing malware.

8. Use Chrome browser, as it will block most malicious sites and not let you load them at all. Not sure if other browsers are doing this, I stopped using everything but Chrome a while back.

9. If you don't know what you are doing, don't click on something.

Mike

Download Microsoft Security Essentials and run it. If that doesn't find anything, download Malwarebytes.

Most likely you installed some malware on your computer. What have you recently downloaded?
