Were the sent mails in you sent items? If they were then your account was hacked.

However;

Email addresses can be spoofed. So if you got replies to messages that look as though they are sent from you and they are not in your sent items, it is most likely someone spoofing your address. There is nothing that can be done about spoofed email.

Download Microsoft Security Essentials and run it. If that doesn't find anything, download Malwarebytes.

Most likely you installed some malware on your computer. What have you recently downloaded?

Mike

Had both of those running at the time. Malware found the 6 items I spoke of, but they were just adware.

I checked the headers, they weren't spoofed, they definitely came from my account. Also, the emails that were sent were sitting in my out-box.

I'm pretty sure I have taken care of it, I just wished I knew how they got my p/w.

If you use Outlook, and they were in your Sent box, then likely they did not take your password -- but rather you installed something on your computer that was malware. Just my experience...

Now it is possible you may be syncing your gmail account with IMAP or etc, and your sent folder is an IMAP folder that populates from the server side... but unlikely, I don't think AOL even supports that.

Well..... the 'sent' items where in my aol folder ONLINE. Not in my outlook. So to see the sent items, they were in the 'sent' folder when I logged into my account online which I rarely do.

OK, so take outlook out of the equation. With that, then yes I would say your password was stolen.

With gmail you can check the login history and see what IP's were used. Dump aol mail, it is really absolutely terrible. Just forward it to gmail and only login and use gmail.
