Can someone explain why in the F anyone would buy an Apple Desktop Pro?
My older brother borrowed about 7 grand from my parents a few years back for a desktop Pro. Unfortunately my parents trusted that he needed all that "power" to render his computer graphics. Reminiscing how stupid that purchase was, I took a look at the 12 core Pro tonight and damn near peed my pants laughing. It starts at 5k for some nice hardware, if it were mid to late 2009. I could walk into Fry's and build a Hackintosh much faster for 1/5 of the price. But seeing how Apple software doesnt exactly push the envelope for even a netbook then what is the point? Encoding? Encoding DVD's because Apple still hasnt figured out Blu Ray. I can encode a DVD in less than 20 minutes with my old 9450 quad core 3 years ago. I havent even tried on my i7 since I have kind of out grown that whole DVD thing. But I am sure I could encode 3 dvd's at the same time in less than 30 minutes. Wait let me guess.... 1080p home movies.. Since hard drive space is cheaper than water (Unless you buy from Apple), I could careless to encode them. And unless you have a home based HD Porno business and are compressing blu ray quality to sell on DVD, then how often do you encode really? And I can assure you there is no apple machine that could do it anywhere near as fast as the latest windows machine. My laptop has a faster video card and I can actually use it! Macs dont use Crossfire or have games (Ha games on a mac) that would require anything more than what an onboard video controller could do. Then they sell a 512 GB SSD for $1250!. First if you claim you need a Mac to encode and then you do it to a limited write life SSD then you are nothing short of a complete idiot. There is nothing else to say about that. And for the Mobo to not have built in RAID ($700 for the card! WTF!) is a nice kick in the balls to boot. And you cant even RAID the SSD's. Add to that the drives are 3 GB/s instead of 6 GB/s and the motherboard doesnt seem to even offer USB 3.0. So... for about a $1000 extra I can get the Mac pro hard drive with 1TB of space to output 7200 rpm NON SSD in RAID 0 which still would not give me near 6 GB/s. Yeah... That makes me want to buy 64 GBs of RAM for $3500 and upgrade the old generation processors to a barely faster still same old generation processor for only 1200 extra! Nevermind the fact that I can get 2 much faster same old generation processors for $1200 combined! Who cares that my hard drives do not have the throughput to justify anything more than a 5 year old quad core that I use in my home server.. Maybe you do some RAM intensive work and require the SLOWER ECC RAM. Well Apple will GIVE you 6 1GB sticks standard! or go to 12 GBs of 1066 for just $450! That isnt bad considering I can only get about 48 - 64 GBs of 1600 DDR3 if I catch a pretty good special for $450 and depending how many slots I have.
To sum up, I can browse over to apple.com and pay over $10,000 for a computer that cannot outperform one I can build for less than 20% of the cost. And then I can even overclock my build and probably be better than next year's Mac Pro.
I wish there was a place for Apple consumers to express their extreme remorse. But I am sure Apple would kill that. I always hear "it just works!" What is "it"? The completely non customizable OS that is using 2 year old hardware? Or is it that awesome software called itunes? You know the one that f'n sucks so bad. Or the Safari browser joke thing.. Or the single threaded iLife or iWork or iEverything for that matter.
Really all you get is a machine that costs way too much from a company that sells an mp3 player in 3 sizes. I love reading Windows vs Mac OS speed comparisons.... Ever notice that all those are done on the same hardware? It is really so pathetic how they have to handicap the "innovative" company products. I'll give it to Apple though, if you can get a single person to buy such an inferior product for a premium price that would make the computer prices of the early 90's jealous,then you must be doing something innovative. Now they have Wall Street thinking that China and India even buys this nonsense. How long can they juggle that completely untrue story....

Me thinks the answer is the same…. "Different strokes for different folks." and "There are many choices available.".
I thoroughly enjoy multiple Winblows virtual machines and the built-in UNIX command line on my recently acquired, first ever Apple product, - a 21" iMac with iTunes and iEverything else. (grin)
It is absolutely not for everyone, and I do not spend even 1 second of my time putting other people down for having their own desire for other computer systems.

I love Apple computers, but I've only owned a Mac Mini and a uni-body MacBook. And I love Mac OS X me being a *nix guy for over a decade. But considering I need Windows for trading, I do go back and forth as to what I'll consider buying next.
But one question I've had lately that I doubt I'll find an answer to..
Does any manufacturer besides Apple provide proactive (managed) hardware firmware updates via the OS?
The answer seems to be NONE! :-(
Meaning most manufacturers and/or Microsoft do not provide notifications of firmware updates and firmware updating via the OS. Most often its required of the user to visit the manufacturers website to find out about firmware/BIOS updates. This could have disastrous results if buggy firmware causes performance degradation or data loss.
With that said through my research alone, the only manufacturer I can suggest for new PC buyers is Lenovo.
I have to laugh at the number of times I hear the whole pc vs mac scenario. I use both windows and mac (on mac hardware, but I have my reasons for that too). As the previous post mentioned, different strokes for different folks. You use what is best for, not what someone else thinks is stupid or not.
(footnote: You will find most of hollywood use macs for cgi, not windows on pc's. Again, each to his own.)
