Hello LittleFinger,

Researching Automation and VPS I came across your post. I am about to go live on an automated trading strategy my self, and I was wondering if you have any tips from your experience since it is very recent.

Did your Strategy work as it did in simulation?
Did you have any of your fears come true as far as power outages and internet. Here in Florida we have a lot of storms and power outages are expected. So a UPS is always handy.
How did your code perform in real time....any surprises from what was theoretically expected?
Do you by any chance advise on the VPS after your experience?
I'm not familiar with SC, Are they your Broker, do you send your orders to another Broker?
Did you have any issues with SC during automation and How good were they handling it?

I will appreciate your input greatly...Thank you.

Sierrachart is a 3rd party application. We are in FL, and from here I would use Rithmic for back up because of the additional redundant software you can use to monitor risk (r trader).

Thanks,

Hello friend,

So I'm still not ready to go live with with the robot trades yet. I am still working on the strategies, but my manual way of trading is working well lately, so I'm just concentrating on that while the markets stay lucrative.

I did have an internet issue that made me consider the value of a VPS though. My roomate resolved it so I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I think he said that our modem's cache had to be cleared out. The ISP had no idea what was wrong. Power cycling the modem and switch wasn't enough to resolve. Whatever it was, we had zero internet access throughout the house. It just happened out of the blue. I think a VPS is worth it if you are not a networking expert or if you can't trust when your ISP will cut off service out of the blue like I've experienced with Comcast.

SC just makes the charting software. From what I've seen they are the best for charting and have the most options for different data providers and brokers. What I plan on using when I finally get a new broker is this: Sierra Chart Futures Order Routing Service With Data

SC has a big learning curve because it is so customizable. The documentation is pretty good on the site, but you will get stuck at times. Especially with programming strategies in ACSIL. When you ask questions on the support board and show that you've done your due diligence, they are usually very helpful. If you missed something that was obvious and are asking for help, you might get a surly reply.

I'm not sure what my automation ETA is at this point, but I will definitely follow up as I get more experience on that front.

Let me know what you decide to do. Not that many folks doing the automation thing on here, so it's good to hear from others making the leap.

Good luck!

LF

Thank you LF for the quick reply.

I kind of thought a lot of folks here are into automated trading, and I thought it is all in the Elite section, which I 'm not part of as of now.

I guess SC programing might be a learning curve as you said. I find Think Script (TOS) and Easy Language (TS) are close. Not familiar with ACSIL.

Will let you know when things go live. Thanks again. Vacationer
